It started back during the 2002-2003 season. Those of us in Altman’s Army would guess the leading scorer before each Creighton game. The pick, no matter the person, was usually Kyle Korver. We also guessed the margin of victory (rarely defeat).
It didn’t take too long to figure out Korver would lead the team in scoring almost every night. So, we started the Kyle Korver Rule. We would try and select the player with the highest point total besides Kyle. At the same time, we would try and guess how many points Kyle would put up. It was a fun way to kill time before a game, as we usually arrived hours before the game so as to keep our front row location.
Fast forward to the 2011-2012 season. It is clear Doug McDermott is on to something a few games into his sophomore season. Through the first third of the season, McDermott is the second leading scorer in the country. As a result, the WBR Pick ‘Em contest will now eliminate McDermott as an option for the general leading scorer prediction. Instead, we will select from the rest of the team PLUS try to guess how many points Doug will score each game (between 13 and 35 so far this season).
Why did it take so long to institute this rule? Good question.
