2012 Creighton Men’s Soccer Preview: Goalkeepers

Creighton soccer fans have been privileged over the last eight seasons to watch some of the best goalkeepers in NCAA history in Matt Allen and 2011 first-team All-American Brian Holt. Despite Holt’s departure the 2012 Jays have talented options in redshirt freshman Jeff Gal, sophomore Alex Bolowich, and true freshman Oshick Shams.

Throughout the spring and exhibition seasons Gal and Bolowich split time in net. Bolowich played keeper in the 3-3 tie against Maryland last Friday, while Gal was in net for the 1-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha. The Creighton staff has not named a starting goalkeeper as of yet, but you can be sure that whatever goalie is chosen will be looked to anchor what could be an entirely new back four.

Jeff Gal (#30)

At 6’1”, Gal has excellent size and presence in the box. He has top-notch reflexes, which were on display against the Mavericks when he stopped a three-on-one breakaway. Gal spent his summer playing with a Columbus Crew U19 squad that won the national championship club tournament at the U19 level. Gal was awarded the Golden Gloves as the best goalkeeper, and named to the All-Tournament team.

Alex Bolowich (#1)

The 5’9” Bolowich has many traits similar to those of Holt. Alex is fearless in the box and can elevate above taller opponents to clear dangerous balls. Bolowich made 6 saves against a potent Terrapin attack. Bolowich communicates well with his defense, a trait paramount as the Jays look to replace all four of their starting defense.

Oshick Shams (#0)

Shams joins the Jays from one of the more fabled Developmental Academies in the nation. He was the starting goalkeeper of Solar Chelsea, a Dallas-based club that produces multiple collegiate players each year. Shams led his team to the Final Four of the U18 championships, losing to eventual winners FC Dallas. Shams has commanding size (5’11”) and agility, yet will likely be looked at to back up Gal and Bolowich. The future is bright for this Bluejay newcomer.

Verdict:

It looks as though Bolowich and Gal are neck and neck heading into this Friday’s season opener against Northern Illinois. Going out on a limb, and considering his incredible summer, I give Gal the slight edge to start.
