Instant Reaction: Creighton Men’s Soccer vs. Rutgers

Name is Blandon. Christian Blandon.  Within minutes of coming in, red-shirt freshman Christian Blandon provided the spark the coaching staff was looking for off the bench.

The Jays were once again led by seniors Andrew Ribeiro, who lined up at centerback, defensive midfielder, and forward today, Jake Brown, Brent Kallman and Choco Gomez. It was Gomez who gave Creighton the lead in the 63rd minute off a brilliantly placed free kick. Gomez too played many positions throughout the match. Gomez was a deep lying midfielder early in the game, but moved up top as a striker to get him more involved around goal, a tactic that worked out perfectly. Brown was stout in defense, holding powerful Rutgers attackers at bay for the entire game. Kallman too provided punch in the middle of the park, breaking up Rutgers play and winning tackles.

But, it was Christian Blandon who put the game out of reach for the Jays. Blandon’s hustle and pace down the line was exactly what the Jays needed to break the tough defensive line of Rutgers. Blandon who has seen time as either a midfielder or forward now seems poised to get more time up top.

Other notable performances included true freshman Brendan Hines-Ike who entered the match midway into the first half and played the rest of match as a central defender. Hines-Ike made multiple great challenges and reads the game very well. Hines-Ike’s inclusion allows the Creighton staff to push Ribeiro into his preferred defensive midfielder role. As a D-mid Ribeiro can be more involved in both aspects of the game. Sean Kim again looked lively, his pace never slowed throughout the game. Fellow new-boy Timo Pitter could be Creighton’s most dangerous player in front of the net. He is constantly looking to get a shot off, and with his lethal left foot Jays fans hope he keeps his play up.

Finally, it was nice to see Bruno Castro contribute this afternoon. Castro is an essential cog in the offense and while it is Castro battled some rust at the beginning of the game he seemed to get stronger as time wore on.
