Men's BasketballRecruiting

Creighton Basketball’s Class of 2013

Recruiting is the life blood of a program, and yesterday Creighton Men’s Basketball team added three quality individuals into its arsenal. Toby Hegner, Darian Harris and Zach Hanson, or as they refer to themselves Triple H, have all signed there Letters of Intent to become Bluejays next season.

Interesting to note that all three had stand-out performances in Creighton’s team camp this summer. During this camp all Jays coaches and staff were able to evaluate not only their talent level on the court, but also the way they handle themselves off the court.

Toby Hegner was quickly identified as one of the top targets in the 2013 class. His size, shooting ability and ability to score with either hand will obviously draw comparisons with Doug McDermott. Coach McDermott had this to say about Toby, “[he] is a very skilled big man who has the ability to stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting yet also possess nice moves around the rim.  He had a great summer and is continuing to work hard to develop his body.  He will be able to play multiple positions for us and we believe that his best basketball is ahead of him.”

Darian Harris was a rather unknown to most Creighton fans before his impressive outing in front of coaches at the Creighton team camp. He too possess great size for his position. He has the ability at 6’6” to run the point, yet can shoot with the best in the country. Coach McDermott had this to say about Darian “[he] an dribble, pass and shoot and possesses a high basketball IQ.  He won an AAU National Championship this summer with the Arkansas Wings.  As he develops his body we anticipate him being a valuable asset to our program at the wing position.”

Zach Hanson is the perfect compliment to his Triple H brethren Hegner and Harris. Hanson was one of the hottest names on the AAU circuit, regularly dominating showcases, and tournaments with both power and finesse. Despite his size he runs the floor very well and has great hands. Coach McDermott had this to say about Zach, “[he] is a young man who has a tremendous potential.  At 6’9” and 240 pounds he has the ability to be a very productive  post player in the MVC.  He can shoot to the 3pt line and can also score in a variety of ways around the rim.  We are planning on him having a very good career at Creighton.”

The 2013 Creighton class is nothing short of brilliant. The Creighton staff did an excellent job of identifying talent, eventually selling what Creighton has to offer. I believe this to be one of the stronger classes Creighton has seen in sometime. It is clear what type of players Coach Mac is bringing in. These are high character, highly skilled players with tremendous upside. Each can shoot the heck out of the ball, and have good size for there position. I’m not talking about good size for a Valley player, I’m talking good size for College Basketball in general.

Coach McDermott, DeVries, Lutz, and Merfeld have things rolling on the Hilltop. Future is bright.
