Last weekend, the Creighton volleyball team took to the road for a couple of matches at Bradley and league leading Northern Iowa. On Friday, the Bluejays ripped apart the last place Braves in their own new women’s sport facility, but could not get over the hump to steal a match against the Panthers in Cedar Falls.
It appears that UNI is in a league by itself in relation to the rest of the Valley when it comes to volleyball. The Panthers have not lost a conference volleyball game for a couple of years now. Creighton is still tied for second place in the MVC standings heading into this weekend, but the real battle throughout the rest of the Valley season will be for that second place spot to be on the opposite side of UNI once the conference tournament rolls around. Creighton still has to travel to Missouri State and Wichita State, the teams tied with the Jays for second place.
This weekend the Bluejays are at home against Indiana State and Illinois State, who are 1-10 and 4-7 in the league respectively. Although their opponents are in the lower half of the league, Creighton needs to win each match to keep any NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Luckily for the fans, there are a lot of activities surrounding the events to make them even more exciting.
Volleyball Chili Feed at Billy Blues
The cold weather has made it the perfect time of year for chili. Don’t go home and make your own. Stop by Billy Blues over in the Harper Center on campus before the volleyball game on Friday night for a chili feed to support the volleyball team from 5-7 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Breast Cancer Awareness Night
After filling your stomach with some great chili head on over to the Ryan Center and Sokol Arena to watch the volleyball team take on Indiana State in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness night at 7 p.m.
The players will be wearing their alternate pink jerseys, and fans are encouraged to wear pink too. This is the fourth straight season that the team has worn its pink jerseys to help with the cancer awareness campaign. Indiana State picked up their first conference victory against Bradley a couple weeks ago in their own Race for the Cure “Pink” night. This is Creighton’s second meeting with the Sycamores this season; the Bluejays blasted the Trees in three sets in front of a whole 75 fans in attendance. There should be a lot more than that at Sokol Arena tonight.
Halloween Costume Contest.
On Saturday, the Bluejays will come back to Sokol Arena for a 7:30 p.m. match with Illinois State. The Bluejays came away victorious on their road trip to Normal in four sets back on October 1. Even though the Redbirds have lost four of their last six matches, they swept Missouri State last week.
Fans of all ages are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes. Be that ghoul or that superhero and you might win some great prizes from the Creighton’s athletics marketing staff during intermission of Saturday’s match.
