Notes from Morrison Stadium: Creighton-Saint Mary’s

  • Creighton played a sloppy game overall. Tyler Polak, usually a total stud along the back line, seemed completely out of it. I can’t decide if that’s because the Jays were sorely missing Jose Gomez, who’s out with a hamstring pull, or if they were simply looking ahead to the upcoming stretch of games.
  • Ethan Finlay scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick, but we should be clear: Finlay earns these PKs. It’s not just that he gets fouled–he works hard to put himself in a position to be taken down, and there’s something to be said for that. For the second time in a row, though, Finlay’s PK shot wasn’t great.
  • As (relatively) poorly as the Bluejays played, the lack of offense can also be attributed to Saint Mary’s’ strong, fast defense. They had some solid athletes on their back line who did well keeping up with Finlay, Ribeiro, et al. That defense was key in producing quite a few good chances for the Gaels.
  • Guido Peña’s role is very interesting. He seems to come on the field in the last 15 minutes, just to be another big body on the field. He doesn’t seem to have a set position, so keep an eye on Peña, who could be a huge factor for Creighton once he settles in.
  • Brian Holt had one of the best games I’ve ever seen, flying all over the place to keep yet another shutout. Eight in a row! Unbelievable. As much as Holt says he’s not thinking about it, I’m sure it’s in the back of everybody’s minds. If Creighton goes down early against Maryland, giving up their first goal–or goals–of the season, the question will be how the Jays react.

Next game is at #3 Maryland’s Ludwig Field, one of the most hostile environments in college soccer. That game starts at 6:30 Central, and the official watch-party is at the Old Mattress Factory in Omaha. See you there!
