Today in Bluejay History (5/11)

May 11, 1991 — Creighton and Utah played the longest softball game in NCAA history.

Creighton’s Kelly Brookhart, a second-team All-America selection in 1991, pitched an NCAA record 31 innings against the Utes. Actually, she tied the record … set during the same game by the opposing pitcher, Janet Womack!

It is no surprise, then, that CU and Utah set 15 different players in that game are in the top three all-time in at-bats in a single NCAA softball game. Creighton’s Lorrie McGill (13), Beth Herod (13), Heidi Ives (12), Wendy Moon (12), and Dedeann Pendleton (12) find their names etched in the record books for.

Creighton won the 31-inning game 1-0, but the two teams weren’t finished with marathon contests. The next day, Creighton and Utah played a 25-inning affair, during which Utah’s Wendy Stewart set the all-time mark for bases on balls in a game (6). The Utes won 4-3, ending Creighton’s season in the WAC Tournament.
