Today in Bluejay History (5/2)

May 2, 1984 — Creighton sweeps Iowa State in baseball under new head coach Jim Hendry.

The Bluejays finished the 1984 season 23-21 overall and just 2-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference, and CU had as many head coaches during the season as they had conference victories.

Dave Underwood started the year as Creighton’s head coach, his fourth at the helm of the baseball program. But after a doubleheader win against Doane College on April 19, Jim Hendry took over the program. The Jays went 3-9 in his first 12 games as head coach, before traveling to Ames and sweeping the Cyclones 3-2 and 11-2 on May 2.

Hendry, now the General Manger for the Chicago Cubs, took Creighton to the NCAA Tournament in 1990 and to the pinnacle of collegiate baseball — the College World Series — in 1991, his last season at CU.
