August 1, 2000 — Former Bluejay star Rodney Buford was part of a nine-player NBA trade. The Miami Heat sent Buford, whom they drafted in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft, to the Charlotte Hornets along with P.J. Brown, Jamal Mashburn, Otis Thorpe, and Tim James. In return for Creighton’s all-time leading scorer, the Heat received Eddie Jones, Anthony Mason, Ricky Davis, and Dale Ellis.

The Hornets waived Buford before the 2000 season started, but he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers later in 2000. He went on to average 5.3 points and 1.2 rebounds per game for the NBA Eastern Conference Champions..
