Fans and students came out in droves Friday night to support the Volleyball team and being a part of history as the Sokol Arena in the Ryan Athletic Center held it’s first official contest.

Almost 2300 fans filled the arena including almost 900 boisterous  students as the Bluejays handled Texas Tech easily 3-0 to start the season undefeated and to open Sokol with a win. There were students lined up outside just before the contest began still waiting to get into the arena.  The new facility drew the fourth largest crowd of all time for volleyball and almost five times the original on-campus mark of 476 when the volleyball program was reinstated.

Between sets, the Ryans and the Sokols were honored for helping make a dream come true in creating a facility for women’s sports.  Many local celebrities were in attendance as Creighton President, Father Schlegel and Nebraska Governor, Dave Heineman enjoyed the match.  Coach Dana Altman was on hand as well as several players from the other Creighton athletic teams.

I will just have to say that the crowd was awesome.  The student support out there tonight was outstanding and the atmosphere was a great testament of what this facility can be.  It was quite exciting.  The Volleyball team will need that same energy Saturday night.

The Bluejays will get back to work Saturday evening as they take on #10 Illinois.  This will be a true test for this team as they basically got their feet wet tonight.  Illinois will take on Texas Tech earlier in the day before the 7PM contest.  Enjoy the sights and fun going on from Friday night’s contest and I’m sure the team would enjoy your support again Saturday night..
