As a true freshman during the 2010-2011 season, Will Artino took a redshirt to prepare his body for the rigors of playing Division I college hoops. Listed at 205 lbs. in the media guide that year, it was evident that the 6-11 Artino needed to pair some bulk with his basketball skills. With Gregory Echenique joining veteran Kenny Lawson midway in December 2010, first-year coach Greg McDermott could reserve a season of Artino’s eligibility while allowing him to adjust to the next level.

Now at 220 lbs. and with two full seasons of practicing against guys like Echenique, Lawson, and 7-footer Geoffrey Groselle, Artino is poised to provide increased minutes in the post. He played 7.2 minutes per game in 34 of the team’s 35 contests as a redshirt freshman. He shot 62.3% from the field, helped by his 8 dunks, and made 75% of his free throws. Defensively, Artino blocked 8 shots, second most on the team behind Echenique.

Frankly, Creighton’s frontcourt is loaded with talent. Joining Artino, Echenique, and Groselle on the front line are All-American Doug McDermott and Ethan Wragge, a forward who played tough when asked to slide down into the five spot when the team went small last season. Defensive effort will be key for Artino if he plans to make a mark and increase his playing time.
