The 2013-2014 season will be the fifth for WBR covering Creighton basketball. Before I helped start the site, I wrote a silly little blog about the Bluejays for a few years. Thinking about everything I’ve penned or read about Creighton hoops during that time, no article made my happier than this:

Doug McDermott to Return for Senior Season

Honestly, there’s nothing I can write in this spot that can explain what McDermott’s meant to the program on the Hilltop the past three years. There’s not really much I can add to a narrative that’s been nearly perfect to this point.

It might seem like a shortcut, but just click here and start reading at page 26. Everything you need to know about McDermott’s time at Creighton exists in the Media Guide pulled together by the excellent Rob Anderson and the rest of the folks at Creighton Sports Information.

McDermott’s profile just blows. Me. Away. He’s already the program’s all-time leading scorer. He needs one more made field goal to have the highest number of makes in CU history (currently tied with Chad Gallagher).

His sophomore and junior seasons are the two highest-scoring years for any Bluejay ever. His 23.17 points per game as a junior is the fourth-highest average in CU history; his 22.89 points per game as a sophomore is the fifth-best average. He has the first- and third-best single season three-point field goal percentages in school history; his 46.4% career three-point percentage is the all-time high. If he makes his career average for free throws in a season (138) as a senior, he’ll finish a few trips shy of Bob Harstad’s career record for made free throws (588).

I mean, it goes on and on. Dude’s a two-time consensus All-American. But there are naysayers out there who want to see if his game translates to a major conference. Sure, he’s scored (often at will, it seemed) against schools like Wisconsin and Arizona State and Cal and BYU and Oregon and Alabama and North Carolina and Iowa and Cincinnati and Duke. But now McDermott gets a chance to help Creighton instantly credible in the Big East Conference — all while displaying the talents and abilities that many feel will make him a contributor at the NBA level and giving cynics something to think about.

Creighton fans should be grateful that McDermott’s back this season. Just kick back, watch him at the CLink or on Fox Sports 1, and enjoy the type of player you’re not likely to see on the Hilltop for a while — if ever.
