The first game of the 2018 College World Series started off hot on Saturday. Literally. Temperatures were in the 100 degree range. It is also possible why the game was a long one, as North Carolina took down Oregon State, 8-6, in a four hour and twenty-four minute game–the longest nine inning game in CWS history.
North Carolina used six pitchers, including losing starter Gianluca Dalatri after 2/3 of an inning due to injury, in the victory. Oregon State did get things started, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. However, the Tar Heels came back and scored six runs in the second and third inning to get a 6-1 lead. The Beavers fought back for three runs in the bottom of the third. Carolina got two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and those turned out to be critical as Oregon St. made a final drive in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-6. That was all they could muster as North Carolina held on for victory.
