Tuesday night, the third-ranked Creighton Bluejays defeated Illinois-Chicago 3-1 in front of 1500 fans at Morrison Stadium. They took the lead early on, thanks to a goal in the ninth minute from Fabian Herbers, his team-best fourth of the season, and continued their streak of six straight games without trailing. Ricardo Perez assisted on the goal, getting it to Herbers on the right side of the goal where he shot it into the far left side of the net.
They took that 1-0 lead in the locker room at halftime, and went up 2-0 in the 58th minute with a goal from junior Timo Pitter. This time it was Herbers assisting, with his pass drawing the UIC goalie out of position and giving Pitter a clean shot-on-goal.
In the 75th minute, UIC’s Jose Fuentes cut the lead in half with a goal, the first goal by a Creighton opponent this season at Morrison Stadium. Any comeback hopes were dashed when Ricky Lopez-Espin added an insurance goal for the Jays in the 84th minute; his goal from the top of the box was assisted by Fernando Castellanos.
Meanwhile, goalie Connor Sparrow continued his stellar play, allowing just his second goal of the season in a 5-0-1 start. Creighton controlled the ball for a majority of the game, and as a result the Flames could only muster two shots on goal and five shots total to make his job easier.
