Creighton Baseball, Softball Back to the Diamond

Ed Servais and the Creighton baseball team look to take advantage of a weekend trip to Nacogdoches, Texas, where they will battle warmer but wet weather while trying to build on their 2-0 start to the 2010 season.

The Bluejays’ first game, originally scheduled for 11 a.m. today, has been moved to a 3 p.m. start due to rain. Wait, CU tries to be proactive and schedule early-season games in Texas to avoid bad Midwest weather and then runs into rain? Shocker. Still, based on Internet weather reports (which, to my knowledge, are about as accurate as my pronunciation of foreign competitors’ names in the Winter Olympics), the Jays should get high temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s for three games in three days.

Their opponents in the Lumberjack Classic? Louisiana-Monroe (Friday, 3 p.m.), Northwestern State (Saturday, 11 a.m.), and Stephen F. Austin (Sunday, 11 a.m.). It will be Creighton’s first meeting in history with both the host Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin (the school, not the individual) and the Demons of Northwestern State. The last time I remember hearing anything about Northwestern State was when they knocked off Iowa in the NCAA Tournament (click here for awesome audio/video proof!). Meanwhile, Creighton took 2 of 3 from ULM in Omaha in 2008.

The Bluejays enter the weekend 2-0, while ULM is 1-2, Northwestern State is 2-2, and Stephen F. Austin is 4-0.

If you want to follow the games, check out the live stats on www.GoCreighton.com. If you want to listen to (most likely biased) play-by-play Friday via the Internet, go to www.ulmathletics.com and click the link to listen to the Warhawk Radio Network.

(Note: I wish I was in Texas watching baseball. I just thought you should know.)

This weekend, about 350 miles away from Nacogdoches, Brent Vigness leads the Creighton softball team into the Embassy Suites Tulsa Invitational. And just like the baseball team, Vigness’ strategy of going south for good weather will backfire just a bit. Instead of playing five games in three days as was originally scheduled, the Bluejays will start the event Saturday (instead of Friday) at 9 a.m. So much for sleeping in at the Embassy Suites!

Creighton’s first game Saturday comes against Missouri-Kansas City. The Bluejays have beaten the Kangaroos (seriously, what animal do you think of when you ponder the City of Fountains? Marsupials are definitely at the top of my list.) 43 times in 44 total meetings between the two schools. After no doubt grabbing some lunch and some rest, the Jays will head back to the diamond to take on South Dakota State at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Jays are 6-1 all-time against SDSU. CU will conclude the weekend Sunday at 10 a.m. against Texas State. The Jays have also found success the Bobcats, leading the all-time series 6-3.

Wake up, pour some coffee, and prep for the Creighton-Bradley Senior Day showdown while tracking the live stats for the early morning softball game at www.GoCreighton.com.
