Creighton Bluejays Weekend Recap

The weekends are a busy time for Bluejays sports. Each Monday, WBR helps you catch up on all the Creighton sports you might have missed.

Two top-ten teams met on the Morrison Stadium pitch Friday night. The match between #3 Creighton and #9 Maryland didn’t matter, though, as the 3-3 tie came in the first exhibition for both teams in 2012.

The Bluejays were gracious hosts to the Terrapins, spotting Maryland a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. CU newcomer Carlos McCrary connected on a goal set up by Zach Barnes and Andrew Ribeiro to tally Creighton’s first goal. Freshman Timo Pitter pulled the Jays even with a goal a few minutes later, off another assist by Ribeiro.

Still, CU went to the locker room trailing 3-2 at halftime.

Jose Ribas would score the equalizer in the final quarter of the match, notching a goal with 12:43 left.

The Terps offered the Bluejays a challenging exhibition opponent. Terrapin Trail notes that 24 Terps saw action Friday night, with 22 getting at least 22 minutes. Elmar Bolowich wasn’t nearly as flexible with his roster, bringing in just three substitutions. His son, Alex, played a full 90 minutes in goal, allowing three scores and making six saves.

Creighton made a quick turnaround for the Bluejays’ second and final exhibition match of the fall.

CU hosted UNO, coached by former Jays assistant Jason Mims. The Mavericks dictated the pace early, until Coach Bolowich made some changes to his personnel. CU outshot UNO 13-2 in the second half, with Bluejays star Eric Miller scoring the game’s only goal in the 74th minute to give Creighton a 1-0 victory.

Jeff Gal made two early saves and recorded the clean sheet in 90 minutes as CU’s keeper. For the match, Creighton outshot the Mavericks 19-3 and led 5-2 in shots on goal.

The men navigated the weekend with a win and a tie, but the women’s soccer team wasn’t as successful. Bruce Erickson’s Bluejays opened their regular season Sunday afternoon in Omaha against Iowa State. The Cyclones and Jays played two scoreless halves before heading to extra time. ISU’s Emily Goldstein notched the game’s only goal in the 92nd minute, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 win and sending Creighton to 0-4-1 all-time against Iowa State.

The Cyclones outshot CU 24-14, including 10-6 in shots on goal. Katie Jo Swanson made 9 saves in goal for the Jays.
