According to a press release put out by Creighton moments ago, the Jays will host San Jose State on Tuesday night in the first round of the CBI. The Spartans are 17-15, which is the most victories the program has had in a season since 1981. Its their first postseason berth of any kind since 1996.
They feature the nation’s third leading scorer in Adrian Oliver, who averages a robust 24.3 points per game, and ironically, handed former Jays coach Dana Altman his first loss as coach at Oregon earlier this season.
Speaking of the former Jays coach, his Oregon Ducks are on the same side of the bracket as the Jays…and should both teams advance that far, they would meet in the CBI Final Four. That’s getting way ahead of ourselves, as both teams need to win twice for the matchup to materialize, but it’s kind of fun to think about, isn’t it? (Edit: Upon further research it appears that last year, the tournament organizers “re-seeded” the teams that reached the Final Four, so its possible Oregon and Creighton would not necessarily meet in that semifinal round if both advanced, despite being on the same side of the bracket.)
