Creighton 119, Oleggio 47
Creighton’s opening game of their Italian exhibition tour was a laugher from the start. Oleggio scored the game’s first two points, and then the Bluejays blew the doors off of the Palazzetto Dello Sport Gymnasium.
Geoffrey Groselle tied the game at 2-2, sparking a 17-0 run that saw the Jays go up 17-2 midway through the first 10-minute period. Creighton would close the first period up 35-9, well on their way to a blowout victory.
The second period saw Oleggio hang in a bit better, with the Jays only winning that 10-minute stretch 29-23.
After intermission, though, Greg McDermott’s team pulled away. The Bluejays outscored their hosts 55-15 during the last 20 minutes en route to a SEVENTY TWO-POINT WIN.
Plenty of new faces posted impressive first performances for Creighton. All told, the team’s newcomers combined for 87 of the Jays’ 119 points.
Junior college transfer Malik Albert led the way, netting 20 points on 9-12 shooting. Prep school freshman Khyri Thomas (17 points, 8 rebounds) and European frosh Martin Krampelj (15 points and 3 steals in 15 minutes) also posted impressive first outings.
Those three led a total of eight Jays who scored 8 or more points (new Jays Mo Watson (9), Cole Huff (13), and Justin Patton and returners Toby Hegner (13) and Geoffrey Groselle (11)).
