The Creighton Bluejays swept three games during the season’s final week, beginning with a 66-60 takedown of #10 Marquette in Milwaukee. Everywhere you looked on the stat sheet, there was evidence of Creighton’s aggressiveness, hustle, determination and scrappiness. The 15 steals were a big one, obviously, but more impressive because all five starters had at least one steal — and six of the eight players who saw double-digit minutes had at least one. It was a team-wide effort. They also had 10 offensive rebounds — securing a second chance on nearly one-third of their missed shots. All of that goodness, and more, is in the WBR Highlight Reel:
Returning home for a midweek game with Providence, the Jays had 13 more steals, and for 28 minutes they looked like a young team that was trying to make a statement — they were not just blowing out Providence, they were dominating the Friars on both ends of the floor. Then they blew a 16-point lead and a game they had in control was instead headed to OT.
Ty-Shon Alexander wasn’t about to let them lose, though. And the Jays won 76-70.
Wrapping up the season against DePaul, they got 39 points from Mitch Ballock who made a school record 11 three-pointers and dispatched with the Blue Demons to head into NYC with a five-game winning streak. It’s the single-greatest shooting performance in school history, and one of the best ever — just 19 players in NCAA history have made more threes in a game, none with a better FG% than Ballock had in this one.
