Jays set to run at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational

Last week the women’s team finished 4th at the NIU Open.  Today both teams stay a little closer to home and travel to Lincoln for the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitiational.  The women are set to run at 10 AM with the men to follow at 10:45 AM.

Coach Chas Davis took the time to answer a few questions recapping last week’s meet and what to expect down in Lincoln today.

White & Blue Review:  Last weekend at NIU the women finished 4th and won five duals.  Most sports fans may be familiar with the dual concept from wrestling.  How does the concept work for cross country?

Chas Davis: Everyone still runs in the same race, but every team is scored separately against each other as if the other runners/teams weren’t in the race.   Nice for coaches & teams to see how they stack up runner for runner with another single team.

WBR: Each runner last weekend improved on their time from Creighton/UNO Classic.  What can that be attributed to?

Davis: More experience and a faster course.  Most of our women improved their time between 30 and 50 seconds, though, & that course wasn’t automatically 30s faster than the week before.  Smart start by our women who gradually moved up instead of getting drawn out too fast from the gun was a big factor in solid improvements.

WBR: What was it like for you to only have to coach one team last weekend compared to normal races where both the men’s and women’s teams compete?

Davis:  I analyze every little thing when it comes down to their races & how we execute.  It’s nice just to be able to focus on one race – less to get distracted by if one person is having a bad race.   I also like having a lot more time to discuss the race with athletes instead of having to get ready for the next race, which is often the men right afterward.

WBR: Are the men ready to run after the week off from competition?

Davis: You can tell these guys are itching to get back out there and race again in what is really their first competition where they feel well prepared to compete.  Everything so far has just been training, even our first race at Chili Greens.

WBR: Will Casey Jergenson and Chris Culhane be back in action?  Any other injuries that may prevent anyone from running?

Davis: Chris and Casey will be back.  Both will be using this as a rust buster for their first race of the season. We’re holding Mike Hitt out, who was our #1 at our first race.  He’s getting over some slight quad tendonitis and a strain, so we’re just being careful this early.  Even though we compete twice in September, we still take this month primarily all as training.  October and November is what matters.

WBR: Any tips for fans traveling down to Lincoln to catch the meet?

Davis: Get out before the Husker game starts!
