Looking Ahead: Creighton Men’s Soccer at Denver

You may remember the Denver Pioneers from last season’s spring game at Morrison Stadium. Creighton won 3-2, remaining undefeated all-time against their Jesuit rivals. Tempers ran high in that match, and are likely to do so again in Denver’s 2011 home opener.

Denver struggled to finish close games last season, having lost six games by one goal, and will rely on returning midfielder Jared Stigall and forward Kellan Christensen to provide leadership and maturity, since they lack it in goal. After graduating senior goalkeeper Joe Willis, Denver’s only returning goalie has one match of experience. This is thought to be the only weakness on an otherwise well-balanced Denver side.

The Pioneers, ranked #19 by Goal.com, are known to be a chippy, aggressive team. They will compete for a conference title and regional respect this season, and the Bluejays ought not take them lightly. Creighton has the upper hand in talent and experience, and will come out on top if they can keep their cool in what’s sure to be another heated affair.
