Looking Ahead: Creighton Men’s Soccer vs. #12 Notre Dame

In their second exhibition match of 2011, Creighton faces another college soccer dynasty in Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish underperformed in last season’s NCAA Tournament and will be hungry for a strong start to the new season. If Akron’s flashy style makes them the Barcelona of college soccer, Notre Dame is the Bayern Munich, known for their dominant midfield possession, direct passing, and insane work rate.

The Irish are led by returning junior Dillon Powers, a scrappy midfielder who has been called “one of the best pro prospects in college soccer.”  Notre Dame lacks a proven goal-scorer this year, but forward Harrison Shipp is predicted to have a big year.

The Domers’ offense will also be bolstered by an impressive recruiting class, featuring four high school All-Americans. One of them, midfielder Nick Besler, was Kansas Player of the Year and is the younger brother of ND and MLS player Matt Besler. Another incoming freshman, forward Vince Cicciarrelli, was Illinois Player of the Year and has garnered comparisons to former Irish standout (and current Portland Timbers forward) Bright Dike.

Notre Dame will be looking to their underclassmen to provide an offensive spark, and will be dangerous if they find it. Expect the winner of this match to be the team whose midfield can control the ball and produce offensively.
