The Metro Summer League starts an intense week with games on both Monday and Thursday night. If you needed a week to go out to the Omaha Sports Academy and watch the league, this one would be it. Catch games at 7, 8 and 9PM.
Will all the Creighton players be playing tonight? There is no guarantee that everyone will be there each night. But for tonight, we have confirmed that all the players should be there, with the exception of Cole Huff and Isaiah Zierden who are both nursing injuries during the offseason.
Projected Game of the Night
9:00 p.m. Court 3–EQ School of Hair (2-1) vs. Mustangs (3-0)
Bluejays to Watch: Zach Hanson, Leon Gilmore
There is one undefeated team left in the league and the Mustangs from Morningside would be that team. They have done a great job playing team basketball like they would during the regular season and knocked off the high-flying Northeast CC team last week in a close one.
This week is a whole new ball game against a tough EQ School of Hair Design team that features Creighton sophomore Zach Hanson and incoming freshman Leon Gillmore, III. They are also coming off of a high with a one point victory over John Higgins Weatherguard. This game could go down to the wire this week.
Creighton Heavy Games
To see your favorite Creighton players in action, you will have to be selective or bounce from game to game since there are no teams facing each other that have Bluejays on each side. But from a Creighton point of view, you know which team you will likely cheer for.
8:00 p.m. Court 2–Zurlo’s (2-1) vs. Cape Truck Acc. (2-1)
Bluejays to Watch: Toby Hegner, Mo Watson
Both of these teams are coming off of close losses last week and could easily be a game of the night candidate. Cape Truck Acc (Midland University) is always fun to watch, but it has also been pretty fun to see how much Toby Hegner has improved over the past year and the excitement Mo Watson will be bringing to the Bluejay program a year from now when he is eligible to play. If you want a glimpse of the future, this one will be fun to watch.
8:00 p.m. Court 1–Judd Knispel Agency (1-2) vs. UNO Alumni (1-2)
Bluejays to Watch: Nick Bahe, Jahenns Manigat, Austin Chatman, Matt Dorwart
Both of these teams are riding high after getting their first wins of the summer last week. The UNO Alumni showed signs of life last week after rolling over Andy’s Lawncare. Nick Bahe’s Judd Knispel Agency team full of current ant past Creighton players should create a nice rivalry type of game.
Note–as a last minute addition, former Creighton great Anthony Tolliver will be playing with the Judd Knispel Agency team tonight.
8:00 p.m. Court 3–Shanks Law Firm (0-3) vs. Apex Foster Care (1-2)
Bluejays to Watch: James Milliken, Tyler Clement
Bluejay fans have been pretty interested to see what James Milliken will do this season for the Bluejays and so far he has tried not to disappoint. Apex Foster Care (Peru State) has been up and down this summer.
8:00 p.m. Court 4–Narmi Group @ Baird (2-1) vs. Big O Boys (1-2)
Bluejays to Watch: Avery Dingman, Ronnie Harrell
The Narmi Group could be 3-0 if not for the stumble against John Higgins Weatherguard a couple weeks ago. They are a tough team with some nice balance of younger players and graduates. Ronnie Harrell has been fun to watch the past few weeks at Summer League and his potential leaves Jays fans excited to see more.
9:00 p.m. Court 1–Paragas Law Firm (1-2) vs. BD (1-2)
Bluejays to Watch: Will Artino, Ricky Kreklow
Paragas Law Firm looks like they are better than their record indicates. They are currently on a 2-game losing streak after a couple of really close games against favorites Bank of Nebraska and Zurlo’s. They will try to rebound against a BD team that is also on a two game losing streak of their own.
9:00 p.m. Court 2–John Higgins Weatherguard (2-1) vs. Lopers (2-1)
Bluejays to Watch: Geoff Groselle, Devin Brooks
As we have said all summer, if you want to see some flash, get over to Court 2 at 9PM to watch Devin Brooks and the John Higgins Weatherguard team in action. After the opening night loss, Higgins has been on a tear the past two weeks as the various players are showing off different parts of their game. Brooks has shown his versatility with scoring and giving the assists to others.
The Rest
7:00 p.m. Court 1-Andy’s Lawncare (2-1) vs. Northeast (2-1)
Two strong teams face off in an early game of the evening which should go down to the wire.
7:00 p.m. Court 2–Bank of Nebraska (2-1) vs. Bruins (1-2)
Bluejays to Watch: Justin Carter, Gregory Echenique
Bank of Nebraska is back on track after the opening night loss. Don’t be surprised if they roll in this one.
9:00 p.m. Court 4–Winning Mentality (2-1) vs. ABIDE (0-3)
Bluejays to Watch: Antoine Young
The Winning Mentality team is looking strong after the opening week loss. This roster full of veteran players is starting to come together nicely.
