Thursday night was seeding night at the Omaha Sports Academy for the last evening of pool play of the Omaha Metro Summer League. A lot of the teams were playing for seeding in the MBL tournament that starts on Monday night There were a couple of upsets that shook up the seeding. While the bracket is still to be released, here is what happened on Thursday night.
NEBHSSPORTS.COM 105, OFWF 90
The biggest crowd was on hand for this matchup as it featured several current Creighton players–Khyri Thomas, Justin Patton, Davion Mintz and Toby Hegner. Thomas and Patton have been the talk of summer league and the fact that this team was undefeated heading into Thursdays matchup. Week after week they have created highlights that everyone could see.
In the first half it was close as OFWF was able to get several second chance points, however, NEBHSSPORTS.COM went into halftime with a 44-40 lead. In the second half, that is where the entertainment ensued. Justin Patton had several dunks throughout the game while Khyri Thomas got in on the action as well. UNO’s Mitch Hahn was on fire from three and between the three of them gained a lot of separation over OFWF despite the performance of Davion Mintz.
#Creighton fans, @Mintzy_10 showed the whole arsenal tonight. Putbacks, dunks, 3s, crossovers, fadeaways… He has a chance to be special.

Mintz had a night of his own where he scored 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting while grabbing 7 rebounds and 5 assists. While Summer League is difficult to determine the performance on the college court, you can just tell that Mintz will be a contributor right away for Creighton. Also for OFWF, Toby Hegner had 26 points, 6 rebounds and an assist.
NEBHSSPORTS.COM continued with their lead and have earned the #1 seed in next week’s MBL Tournament.
Some reaction, stats, photos and video from the game below:
UNO fans, @mitchellhahn was balling tonight. Dropping 30-foot 3s AND he caught a body too. Didn’t know he had that in him.

Judd Knispel Insurance 76, BD 74
This game had an interesting feel from it from the start.

This game had an interesting feel from it from the start. BD lost their first game of the summer on Monday night and was without James Parrott who was out with an injury, while Judd Knispel was coming off of their first win of the summer on Monday night and went into the game with a little momentum.
The game was back and forth throughout the first half but Judd Knispel maintained a lead into the half despite some hot shooting from Andy King from behind the arc. In the second half, both teams continued to battle. Galen Gullie hit a three in the corner to give BD the first lead of the second half, 62-60, with 9 minutes to go. At about the four minute mark, Creighton’s Kaleb Joseph put down a tip-slam to put Judd Knispel up two points. BD battled back down the stretch to take a 74-70 lead with under 30 seconds to go.
That is when the Wayne State connection of Matt Thomas and JJ Zumbrennen kicked into action. Thomas, who has been shooting really well in summer league behind the arc, hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 74-73 with 19 seconds remaining. After a timeout by BD, you can see for yourself what happened:

After the turnover by BD on the inbounds play, JJ Zumbrennen ended up hitting the three-pointer in the corner to put Judd Knispel up 76-74 with 9 seconds remaining. BD tried to answer at the end, but the play was broken up and BD lost their second straight game and it totally changed their seeding for the tournament next week. BD fell to 4-2 while Judd Knispel moved to 2-4.
With Judd Knispel beating BD earlier tonight that puts a big wrench in the bracket. BD was also without James Parrott tonight #metrobball

Going Vertical 101, Bank of Nebraska 79
If you want to see which team is going to challenge NEBHSSPORTS.COM for the MBL tourney championship, look no farther than the Going Vertical team. They pretty much stuffed any talk of losing against Bank of Nebraska to bed right away. Well almost right away. Both teams were competitive up to halftime when Going Vertical had a 43-42 lead at the half. But then the 2nd half, Going Vertical put Bank of Nebraska away and it turned into a dunkfest:
Pretty sweet 1-handed dunk from Justin Carter. Going Vertical starting to run away in their game up 75-53 with 11 minutes to go #metrobball
— Patrick Marshall (@wildjays) July 15, 2016
And then a nice alley-oop from Ben Holling to Tre’Shawn Thurman. Just fun and games now. https://t.co/ZDtfTvB0cs
— OmahaSummerLeague (@OMAMetroLeague) July 15, 2016
Soon after those two dunks was another one by UNO’s Tra-Deon Hollins. Justin Carter finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the victory. Going Vertical went to 5-1 with their only loss against NEBHSSPORTS.COM in week one of the summer and will solidly hold the #2 seed going into the tournament next week.
Rooferees 105, Apex Foster Care 81
With league organizer Jason Isaacson attending to some personal business, it was up to the rest of the Rooferees roster to lead the way and help their seeding. It was a close game in the first half as the Rooferees took a 44-37 lead into the half. Like the other games during the 7:45 time slot, this one started getting out of hand early in the second half. The Rooferees went on an 18-9 run to start the second half and pulled away quickly. The Rooferees won their third straight game and have positioned themselves to be a contender next week.
UNO Alumni 82, Regulators 72
UNO Alumni has had up and down games all summer and had a couple of games where they could have lost in the final minutes. They did not do that on Thursday night in an all-important game between two 3-2 teams. Things were intense early including a technical foul on the Regulators for complaining about the calls they were not getting. UNO Alumni led throughout the game including a 44-39 halftime lead. Then this happened:
UNO Alumni starting to pull away in 2nd half as well. Up 61-46 with 15 minutes left to go #metrobball
— OmahaSummerLeague (@OMAMetroLeague) July 15, 2016
It looked as though UNO Alumni would pull away, but the Regulators kept it close as they continued to battle back and keep the game within double-digits. However, UNO Alumni learned from their mistakes and pulled out the win to move to 4-2 while the Regulators may have fallen to the lower 8 seeds for the tournament.
Narmi Group @ Baird 75, Air Force 37
The Narmi Group has flown under the radar a bit over the last few weeks. Unfortunately for the Offutt Air Force team, the Narmi Group was right on their radar screen. As has been usual for the Offutt team, they kept things close in the first half and Ronnie Harrell and the Narmi group took a 34-22 lead into the half. However, the second half has always been a different story for the Offutt team. They were only able to score another 15 points in the second half and the Narmi Group pulled away for the blowout victory. Here is some video from the game.

Lopers 79, EQ School of Hair Design 77
This game was close throughout. EQ had an opportunity to win the game on a final possession with 6 seconds remaining. Will Artino launched a three pointer that was inches from going in as the Lopers escaped with victory and sent EQ School of Hair Design to 0-6.
Winning Mentality 71, Shanks Law Firm 63
It is unfortunate that this game was buried at the bottom of the recap because Winning Mentality is legit. After losing their first game of the summer, they rattled off five straight wins including the victory over Shanks Law Firm on Thursday night. Winning Mentality has quietly moved into the 3-seed for the tournament and could be a group to watch out for.
The MBL tournament starts on Monday, July 18th. Bracket is forthcoming. For more on Monday night’s action visit the OMAMetroLeague Twitter timeline and visit the MBL mini-site.
