The Mother Nature Report
It’s been a weird winter in Washington, D.C., what with above normal snowfall and colder than normal temps. Still, spring has sprung, albeit a bit later than they’re used to in the Beltway. This weekend? Accuweather says:
- Mid 60s at first pitch Thursday
- Low 70s with rain possible at first pitch Friday
- Mid 50s at first pitch Saturday
100-ish Words About Georgetown
According to the school’s “2015 Quick Facts” published before the season, Georgetown returns 21 players from the 2014 team. That version of the Hoyas went 19-29 and finished tied for sixth in the Big East (5-13 in conference play). Creighton hosted the Hoyas last year, sweeping GU en route to a regular season championship.
This season, Georgetown (12-12; 167 RPI) is just 8 wins away from surpassing last year’s total. The Hoyas own arguably the best win by a Big East team in 2015, a midweek road victory over nationally ranked Virginia.
Fun fact: Creighton’s three Creighton Prep grads Taylor Elman, Kevin Connolly, and Jeff Albrecht will see a familiar face in the Georgetown dugout. Omaha native and Prep grad Evan Ryan suits up for the Hoyas.
The Bluejays, by the Numbers
- Record: 15-8 (15-8 non-conference; 0-0 Big East)
- RPI: 80 (c/o warrennolan.com)
Last Time Out
The Bluejays enter Big East play winners of 10 of their last 12 games. Sure, they were shut down at the plate and committed costly mistakes in the field in a midweek loss to nationally ranked Nebraska. But Ed Servais’ team swept Stetson in Omaha last weekend, stretching their winning streak to seven games.
The Bluejays fell behind early in games Friday and Saturday against the Hatters before rallying in the sixth inning of both games to fuel their comebacks. In Sunday’s series finale, Creighton jumped ahead with a four-run second inning on their way to a 15-run outburst to bury Stetson and complete the sweep.
During the three games the Bluejays reached base at .422 clip and their hitters finished the series with a .912 OPS. With runners in scoring position they were 15-for-36 against the Stetson pitching staff.
On the mound, the Creighton starting pitchers performed up to the standards of Servais. All three starters (Matt Warren, Rollie Lacy, and Keith Rogalla) finished at least five innings of work, or got their team “into the game”, as Servais likes to say. Although only Rogalla earned a decision, the trio struck out 10 hitters and issued only three base on balls in 16 innings combined. They gave way to a bullpen that aside from a three-run eighth inning on Sunday, with the game already in hand, didn’t allow a single run in 10 and 1/3 innings of relief.
The weekend marked the return to regular duty for Reagan Fowler, Creighton’s key cog offensively. Fowler bounced back from back spasms to rake seven hits and knock in seven runs. He earned Big East Player of the Week accolades for his work.
