On Deck: Creighton Bluejays Baseball vs. Stetson Hatters

Series Details

The Mother Nature Report

The good news? Not much precipitation in the forecast. The bad? The Hatters won’t be bringing Floridian temps with them to Omaha. Accuweather says:

  • Low 40s at first pitch Friday night
  • Mid 40s at first pitch Saturday afternoon
  • High 50s at first pitch Sunday afternoon

100-ish Words About Stetson

I want to use this space this week to introduce Pete Dunn.

This is his thirty-sixth season as head coach of the Hatters, just a remarkable number. Dunn’s compiled 1,268 wins to 839 losses (and three ties) at Stetson, his one and only D-I head coaching job. He’s among the most winningest managers all time in college baseball and in the top 10 among active ones, and he’s done it all at one school.

Dunn’s sent nearly 80 players to professional baseball. He’s a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Oh, and he’s Chipper Jones’ godfather.

The Bluejays, by the Numbers

Last Time Out

After taking three of four from Utah Valley and snagging a St. Patrick’s Day win against South Dakota State, it seemed Ed Servais’ team had some positive momentum on their side. Then they flew to New York to not play baseball.

While Omahans basked in the warm sun and sudsy beer gardens surrounding TD Ameritrade Park last weekend, the Jays were stuck amongst cold and snow trying to get games in at Stony Brook. Friday and Saturday’s games were both cancelled due to weather; Sunday, the Jays managed to play and post an 8-3 win. Buoyed by a six-run second inning, Creighton’s offense managed to overcome leaving 11 runners stranded on base.

The Bluejays lost another game this week to weather, as a two-game midweek series against Air Force turned into a single contest Wednesday night. Creighton kept its winning ways thanks to a 4-3 victory in 14 innings, in spite of committing an egregious baseball sin that erased the go-ahead run.

After collecting a would-be game-winning single with two outs in the 11th inning, Ryan Fitzgerald chose to join his teammates in the dogpile instead of finishing his round of first base with a trip to second base. That’s a boner move, to be sure, one that the Air Force outfielder recognized and then took care of with a throw to the infield. Fitzy was forced out, the game continued, and Servais used it as an, um, teaching moment for his team.

Take it from Steve Pivovar of the Omaha World-Herald:

So, a frustrating, exciting, but ultimately winning last week for the Bluejays, boners be damned!
