On Tuesday night, the Metro Summer League played some late night basketball at the Omaha Sports Academy. A lot of the games had some high scoring outputs by some players and a few surprises. The “Dream Team” won a game and Avery Dingman was all over the court. It was a good night for the Creighton players.
Summer League hoops will be played again on Thursday to finish pool play before the start of next Tuesday’s playoffs (7/17). But in the meantime, here are the results of the action on Tuesday night:
Narmi Group @ SmithBarney 86, Zurlo’s 82:
Recent Bellevue University graduate Jelani Johnson had 14 points for the Narmi Group as an alternate for them and Creighton’s Taylor Stormberg nailed three 3-pointers to help get the win.
Thompson Basketball Camp 105, Chris Carder Agency 90:
What this game lacked in defense made up for some strong offense. Avery Dingman then took over. He ended up with 31 points while looking strong and aggressive driving the ball to go along with hitting a few from behind the arc. Goeff Grosselle is big and no one matched up well with him so he dominated inside. He had 18 points. Andre Yates looked good and Isaiah Zierden showed some great teamwork distributing the ball.
Paragas Law Offices 78, HCMC 73:
Paragas Law Offices got its first win over HCMC 78-73. Creighton’s Josh Jones had 21 points with three triples and Eastern Washington graduate Benny Valentine led with 33 points and six three-pointers. Hastings College’s Jake Marvin led HCMC with 21 points and Morningside’s Danny Rudeen had six three pointers for 18 points.
Andy’s Lawn & Landscape 86, EQ School of Hair Design 74:
Jason Dourisseau looked good again for Andy’s with 29 points and John Turek was too much inside and outside, scoring 28. Midland’s teammates James Parrott had 28 points for EQ and Ben Imig had 21 points with five three’s and Jahenns Manigat had 12. Gibbs played sparingly and was real unselfish, looking like he wanted to get a run in but was careful of his legs. It was nice to see him play and distribute the ball.
Shanks Law Firm 71, Bellevue University 70:
Shanks Law Firm defeated Bellevue 71-70 on a last second three pointer by Bellevue alumni Jace Fredenburg off the assist from Omar Bynum. Ben Walstrom led Shanks with 18. Bynum had 15 and Fredenburg 16 with four threes from behind the arc. Dominique Grant had 13 and Darius Robinson 12 for Bellevue University in the loss.
Judd Knispel Agency 68, Vanderslice 64:
Knispel had an all Bluejay backcourt with Nick Bahe, Nate Funk, Austin Chatman, and Josh Dotzler in getting their first summer league win. Chatman and Funk had 12 points each and former Husker Stephon Bradford led them with 16 points. Knispel’s win came due to made free throws down the stretch. Vanderslice was led by the two Vanderslice brothers–Ben had 14 and Josh with 13.
Higgins Weatherguard 93, PJ Morgan Real Estate 70:
Higgins suffered their first loss in summer league play to PJ Morgan 93-70. Higgins is without UNK’s Mike Dentlinger who tore the LCL in his knee. He was their big time player and the hope is that he is back healthy for his season in Kearney. PJ Morgan looked good with UNO junior Matt Hagerbaumer scoring 18 points while Mitch Albers scored 17. UNO recruit Marcus Tyus looked very good. He had a nice stroke nailing a few three pointers and great vision distributing the ball to teammates.
Construction Zone 93, ABIDE 80:
Construction Zone was led by former Creighton walk-on Dave Finklea with 16 points and Peru State graduate Josh Horton with 14 points. ABIDE was led by South Dakota graduate KC Rodenburg’s 17 points, but are now 0-4 in summer league play.
Bank of Nebraska 111, Wissing 78:
Bellevue University graduate Klaye Rowe got close to the league record this summer scoring 42 points for Bank of Nebraska. Bank of NE was on fire from deep connecting on 22 three-pointers. They are still looking like the team to beat this summer even without their superstar trio of Wilkinson, Carter, and Biggs on Tuesday night. Bank of Nebraska goes to 4-0 while Wissing falls to 0-4.
UNO Alumni 87, Walentine O’Toole McQuillan & Gordon 77,
Creighton’s Ethan Wragge had 21 points in first half and 25 for game, including 19 of his teams first 21 points of game. He hit seven shots to start game including five three pointers. But it wasn’t enough as the UNO Alumni had a big game the rest of the way. UNO’s Mike Jenkins took it to Creighton’s Nevin Johnson all night and had 28 points in the win.
