The Dream Season, 20 Years Later: Games 1 and 2

Twenty years ago last week, Jim Hendry and the Creighton Bluejays baseball team began their journey to the program’s first and only trip to the College World Series, one of the greatest accomplishments in Omaha sports history. All spring, White & Blue Review will look back, game by game, at the Bluejays’ own Road to Omaha

Game 1: Creighton 18, Mount Marty 1 (February 16, 1991)

Recap: Beginning the season ranked in the top 20 nationally, the Bluejays tallied 14 hits en route to an 18-1 blowout against Mount Marty. Mike Heathcott earned the win, his first of what would be 15 wins in 1991, still Creighton’s single-season record.

Star Performers: Scott Stahoviak Rick Freehling, and Steve Hinton each knocked in 3 RBI, while Ryan Martindale hit a home run and recorded 4 RBI.

Game 2: Creighton 15, Wayne State 3 (February 21, 1991)

Recap: After moving inside the top 15 in the national rankings, Jim Hendry’s Bluejays posted its second consecutive double-digit win against an overmatched local opponent. Creighton scored 3 runs in the first inning and in the fourth inning, giving Mike Heathcott more than enough support for his second win of the season.

Star Performer: Heathcott allowed just 1 hit in 4 innings en route to the win.
