Thorson Gives Spike to Jays Volleyball

Standing at 6’3″, you would think Heather Thorson would be continuing her athletic career playing basketball.  Her latest recognition came last week in the third annual Warrior Basketball Classic at Midland Lutheran College.  Easily the tallest player on the court, she tallied 11 points, 6 rebounds and a steal in 18 minutes of play to help lead her All-Star team to a 70-66 victory.

Heather was profiled by Metro Sports Source this past February using basketball pictures and stats to highlight her athleticism.  She was also named to the D-1 2nd team All-State basketball team.

However, Thorson gave her commitment to the Bluejay Volleyball team this past fall, knowing she always wanted to play Volleyball:

“Ever since I was really young, I’ve wanted to play college volleyball,” Thorson said. “I was so excited when Creighton offered me a scholarship, because it is my dream school. It has a great dentistry school and volleyball program.”

To top off her senior year in high school, Heather was named the Fremont Tribune Female Athlete of the year.

Mead is a small school just west of the Omaha metro area.  The small school setting allowed her to play both Volleyball and Basketball and to break several school records including most kills in a game and a season.   Not only is Heather a great athlete, but she also carried a 4.0 grade point average and ranked number one in her class.    The Fremont Tribune goes on to say more:

Thorson did a variety of athletic endeavors. She participated in ballet in grade school and played softball up until her seventh-grade year. She qualified for the state track meet as a junior in the triple jump, but opted not to go out as a senior to concentrate on volleyball.

Heather will come into her freshman year with the Jays as the tallest player on the team.  I would expect her to take on a major role from the beginning.  They will need her in the upcoming season as the Volleyball team will play a challenging schedule including 12 matches against teams that made the NCAA tournament last season and to help open the new Ryan Center and D J Sokol Arena.  Thorson joins the 3 player volleyball recruiting class that includes Brooke Boggs from Wildwood, Mo. and Caitlin Templeton of Rapid City, S.D.

Fans will get their first chance to check out the 2009 Creighton team on Aug. 22 when the team holds the Blue-White Scrimmage at D.J. Sokol Arena. The match will feature an intrasquad scrimmage among the Bluejay team and will be free to the public to attend..
