January 30, 1968 — Bob Portman takes control for Creighton against LaSalle.
Portman scored 42 points (the 6th highest single-game total in CU history) on 19-41 shooting from the field. The 19 made field goals is tied for the Creighton single-game record (Portman would again make 19 shots the next season against Weber State), and the 41 shot attempts stands alone atop the single-game field goal attempts list in Creighton history.
Until the likes of Chad Gallagher, Bob Harstad, and Rodney Buford came to Creighton, Portman was the school’s all-time leading scorer (1,876 points), this despite playing for only three seasons. Portman’s 24.68 points per game average is more than 4 points better than the second best career per-game scoring average in CU history (Paul Silas’ 20.51 ppg).
