Friday (November 2)
Creighton Hosting the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament (Morrison Stadium)
- #5 Indiana State vs. #1 Evansville (3:30 p.m.)
- #6 Creighton vs. #2 Illinois State (6:00 p.m.)
The Bluejays won just one match in Missouri Valley Conference play this season. But it was definitely one that counts; Creighton beat Drake in penalty kicks in the MVC Quarterfinals last weekend. With the win, the Jays advanced to the event they’ll host at Morrison Stadium.
In the second of two semifinals Friday the Jays will hope to even the season series with Illinois State. Creighton dropped a home match to the Redbirds 2-1 on September 29. Brittney Neumann scored her fifth goal of the season in the loss.
Creighton Volleyball at Bradley (7:00 p.m.)
The Bluejays volleyball team is 20-3 overall and 11-1 in MVC play, leading the conference standings with just a few weeks to play before the conference tournament. In the first of two road matches this weekend Creighton takes on the ninth-place Braves (8-16 overall, 2-11 MVC) before heading to Cedar Falls to square off against second-place UNI.
The Jays are 13-1 in their last 14 meetings with Bradley, but that loss came last season in Peoria.
Creighton Men’s Basketball vs. University of Mary (Exhibition; 7:05 p.m.)
FINALLY. The most hyped team on the Hilltop starts its season tonight with an exhibition game against the University of Mary. Greg McDermott’s team sits inside the top 20 of both major college basketball polls to start the year. His son, Doug, is a preseason All-America honoree after ending last season as one. And four of five starters (and all key reserves) return from a team that went 29-6 and won a game in the NCAA Tournament last year. Expectations are high. Can the Bluejays match them? Exceed them? A game against Mary likely won’t answer those questions, but it should be fun nonetheless.
Saturday (November 3)
Creighton Volleyball at Northern Iowa (6:00 p.m.)
Creighton’s only wins in Cedar Falls against UNI came in 2005 and 2007, both of which were five-set wins. The Panthers are 17-2 all-time against CU at home, and they are 40-4 all told against Creighton. This is arguably Kirsten Bernthal Booth’s best team of Bluejays; can they beat UNI a second time this season and pull away in the Valley championship race?
Creighton Men’s Soccer at Evansville (7:00 p.m.)
The Jays (12-3-2 overall, 4-0-1 MVC) head to Evansville (9-6-1, 3-1-1) for the Purple Aces’ Senior Night as the Valley wraps league play this weekend. An Aces win would give them a share of the league title, while a CU win give Creighton another outright conference championship.
Sunday (November 4)
Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship Match (Morrison Stadium)
- #5 Indiana State/#1 Evansville vs. #6 Creighton/#2 Illinois State (3:00 p.m.)
Consider it a major upset if Creighton’s playing Sunday. But if the Bluejays are on the pitch, they’d have to be the favorite with the home crowd behind them and an all-or-nothing mentality fueling them for a potential tournament title.
