With the days of watching McKenzie Fujan score 38 points on national television against DePaul behind them, the Creighton women’s basketball coaching staff turns to the next big freshmen class to provide some memorable Bluejay moments. One guard who may be tasked with giving Creighton that scoring punch is Park High School shooting guard Sydney Lamberty.

During her high school career Lamberty was twice named an All-Minnesota selection. She scored more than 2,000 points in her four years at Park High School in Cottage Grove, Minn.

That scoring talent has been put on display during the first few weeks of practice and in front of Creighton fans at Bluejay Madness. At the annual event where newcomers like Lamberty get to show their skills off for the fans for the first time, she helped get herself and teammate Devin Brooks to the semifinals of the 3-point shootout. What she didn’t get to show much of that night was her ability to create off the dribble and score inside against bigger, stronger players.

After losing 52% of its scoring offense, Creighton will need some of the newcomers such as Lamberty to pick up where the graduating senior class left off.

Head Coach Jim Flanery on Lamberty

“[Sydney] is a very talented offensive player. She’s a very good passer. She plays at the right pace on offense, and can really score in all three ways — she can from the three, she has a pull-up, and she can get all the way to the basket. She just needs to keep working defensively to catch up to the speed of the college game on that end.”

5-on-5 with Sydney Lamberty

Q: What were some of the main factors that led you to Creighton?

A: “One of the major things was that it was in between being away from home, but also not too far away. Plus, when I came here, I don’t know how to explain it … it felt like I belonged here. Being on a smaller campus felt more “homey.” The coaches are awesome and the girls were super welcoming when I came here. It was a combination of everything.”

Q: How can help this team right away?

A: “Driving to the basket, drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. Just looking to score.”

Q: What is one area of your game that needs to improve the most?

A: “Definitely defense. When we watch film that’s definitely something that I need to work on. Both my help defense and on-ball defense.”

Q: How has practice and preseason preparation gone so far?

A: “It was kind of a shock at first, but it’s been getting a lot better. I’m getting more into a routine.”

Q: What are your goals for your college career?

A: “Obviously to get to the NCAA Tournament. And just to have a successful season with the girls.”
