Doug McDermott Named First Team All-American

Doug McDermott has been named to the 1st Team All-American list by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Doug becomes the first player in Creighton history to be given First Team honors in the history of the USBWA list, which has been awarded annually since 1957. Creighton has had just one other USBWA All-American in program history; Kyle Korver was second team All-American in 2003.

The last first-team All-American from an MVC school was in 1988, when Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins was honored.

McDermott joins some heavy hitters in college basketball as Anthony Davis (Kentucky), Draymond Green (Michigan State), Thomas Robinson (Kansas) and Jared Sullinger (Ohio State) were also named to the First Team list.

It’s been a historic year for McDermott. He ranks third nationally with his 23.2 scoring average and seventh with his 61% shooting from the floor. He also ranks second in the MVC with 8.2 rebounds per game and 49.5 percent marksmanship from three-point range. McDermott owns a Creighton-record 765 points this season, and has scored more points in his first two seasons than any player in school history.

The USBWA All-American list is one of four major All-American awards in men’s college hoops, along with the Associated Press, The Sporting News and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Doug was named second team All-American by the Sporting News earlier this month; the other two lists will be released following the NCAA Tournament, and “Consensus All-Americans” will be compiled based on a complicated formula explained here.
