Creighton Bluejays Basketball Recruiting Update (June 2014)

What a difference a month makes.

Creighton head coach Greg McDermott and his Bluejays coaching staff remained extremely active in the transfer market adding California wing Ricky Kreklow to the roster — he’ll be eligible immediately. Kreklow will pay his own way, as the last two Jays scholarships for the 2014-15 season went to Nevada transfer Cole Huff and Boston University transfer Maurice Watson. Those two will sit out the upcoming season as traditional transfers. And while Watson, Huff, and Kreklow are major coups for the Jays their signatures will have no impact on how Creighton proceeds in 2015.

At the beginning of May Creighton seemed the likely leader for Texas ace Matt McQuaid and was in good position for up-and-coming sharpshooter Brevin Pritzl from Wisconsin. Both shooting guards surprisingly ended their recruitment by committing to hometown schools — McQuaid to SMU and Pritzl to Wisconsin.

Despite losing out on Pritzl and McQuaid, a few other top targets are beginning to take shape for the Jays. Creighton has gotten heavily involved in the Texas wing duo Jordan Murphy and DJ Hogg, while the Jays have also seemed to step up their recruitment of East Coast prospects Chris Clarke, Donovan Mitchell, and Aaron Falzon. The Bluejays offered Falzon, Mitchell, and Clarke a while back, but have really been a priority for the staff and Coach McDermott in particular.

Also joining the group of hot prospects is Malik Beasley, who turned heads in May after some dominating performances in the EYBL including a 41-point effort.

Alex Illikainen :: 6’9” :: (Grand Rapids) :: Howard Pulley

Alex Illikainen Spring 2014

June 2014 Update :: May was an interesting month for Alex. Following some uncharacteristic poor performances on the AAU circuit a few schools began ‘cool’ on the 6’9” forward from Minnesota. The Jays are not one of those teams. Previous strong contenders for Illikainen including Iowa State and Indiana began to show less interest in Alex, according to conversations with Minnesota and Iowa State beat writers. It is believed that the scandal that has rocked Dana Altman and Oregon has also pushed the Ducks behind others in Alex’s recruitment. I believe that Alex is looking at Creighton and Minnesota the hardest with California squarely in third position. New Cal HC Cuonzo Martin is attempting to make up ground and Providence College, where Alex’s sister is a hockey player, is coming on strong, but I believe it will be between the Jays and Gophers at this point. Alex recently went on the record saying that he will begin to narrow down his list, or decide on a school, following the Nike Peach Jam tournament in the late June, early July.

May 2014 Update :: Anyone who follows Creighton recruiting is well aware of just how much Creighton likes Alex. Illikainen has been a top priority of the staff for over three years now. The staff has seen Alex develop from an active player on both ends of the floor, to a player with a special ability to always put himself in good spaces on the floor. Illikainen is a dominate rebounder who commands the paint. The biggest improvement in Alex’s game has been his outside shot. He possess a polished stroke and when coupled with his talent of finishing around the rim makes him one of the most complete players in the mid-west.

Recruiting Update :: Minnesota, Creighton, California, Oregon & Providence

Glynn Watson :: 5’11” :: (St. Joseph) :: Illinois Wolves

Glynn Watson @ JayHawk Invitational

June 2014 Update :: Watson’s big spring landed him an opportunity to try-out for the USA U18 basketball roster. He is one of the youngest players in the camp and could earn a spot on the team as one few true point guards in the system. On the recruiting front Watson has come out and said he is hearing most from Creighton, Nebraska and Purdue. Experts believe Purdue is in front for Glynn. Watson recently went on record saying he likes how McDermott coaches and he would be an ideal point guard fit for a team fond of jacking threes. Look for Creighton to get an Official Visit from Watson at some point in June and attempt to get his signature before steps out of the new practice facility.

May 2014 Update :: Newsflash, Creighton is targeting Chicago. Hard. Case and point is the recruitment of St. Joseph point guard Glynn Watson. Watson has the perfect combination of tough and smooth. He enjoys contact in the lane yet never loses his composure. Despite his uncanny ability to get to the hoop he is primarily a pass first guard. He plays for St. Joseph and Illinois Wolves, two of the most respected programs in the area, and has already played in some high-level, high-stakes games already in his career. Like all of Coach Mullins Illinois Wolves players, Watson is a solid defender who plays suffocating defense on opposing guards. Glynn knows when to pass and when to look for his own points. He recently hit the game winner at the JayHawk Invitational and was seen as one of the top players in the tournament.

Recruiting Update :: Creighton, Nebraska & Purdue

Cody Schwartz :: 6’7” :: (West De Pere) :: Wisconsin Blizzard

Cody Schwartz @ NY2LA Spring Extravaganza

June 2014 update :: May was an excellent month for the sharp shooting Schwartz. Cody plays for a smaller AAU squad so his stats are off the charts but it is the way he plays that has drawn attention from major college basketball programs. Despite not having much help he consistently takes his team deep into tournaments on his back, playing multiple positions and doing everything and anything the team needs. A few eye-popping performances have begun to open the eyes of home-town Wisconsin. Experts believe it will ultimately come down to the Jays v Badgers for Schwartz. Creighton has been on Cody for so long that I believe the Jays are in the lead for him and I personally think he will be the first player in the 2015 class to commit to the Jays.

May 2014 update :: Schwartz has been a recruiting priority for this staff for over two years now. Creighton was one of the first schools involved with Cody when the Jays called the Valley there home. Despite the move into the Big East Cody remains a top target as his game, like McQuaid translates into what the Jays are hoping to accomplish with their roster. Schwartz plays the all important stretch four position, with the ability at 6’7” to drain any open shot, yet has the body and skill to defend the post. Check out these highlights from this tournament last week. His game is eerily similar to a few Creighton Bluejays I can remember, I mean he even wears an under-shirt!

Recruiting Update :: Creighton, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Marquette, & Northern Iowa

Henry Ellenson :: 6’10” :: (Rice Lake) :: Wisconsin Playground Elite

Henry Ellenson 2013 Highlights

June 2014 Update :: Ellenson continued his stellar play for the Playground Elite all the way into some more blueblood interest. He is know a major target of North Carolina, Duke and Wisconsin. Ellenson as of late has begun to fall in love with three pointer which has hurt his game at times. His game at this point is predicated on his quickness and agility in the low post. He has shed a lot of weight and is trying to mold his game into a dual threat, which I believe he will achieve, but he is not there yet. The Jays only hope at this point with Ellenson is that the staff can convince him to come to Creighton for immediate playing time, which he would likely earn. He is a top 20 player in the 2015 class and would be a star in Omaha from day 1.

May 2014 Update :: Ellenson is 6’10” post player with the skill set of a point guard. He runs the floor well, is a terrific passer and has a very impressive outside shot for someone with his frame. Ellenson is more than capable of backing down any player his age, but can also step out onto the wing and take players off the dribble. He has the ability to guard someone on the wing, but can also face guard a true post. There are things I’ve seen Henry do that I’ve never seen anyone his size accomplish. He has one of the more diverse games in the 2015 class and is looking to make an impact from the day he steps onto a college campus. At Creighton Henry would likely be given the opportunity to start right away.

Aaron Falzon :: 6’7” :: (Northfield Mount Hermon) :: Expression’s Elite

Aaron Falzon 2013-2014 Season Highlights

Aaron Falzon Spring 2014 Interview

June 2014 Update :: I was recently on Nick Bahe’s radio show talking recruiting and brought up Aaron. Falzon fits Creighton perfectly. He is seen as the top shooter in the 2015 class and at 6’7” does lots of other things on the floor that make a difference. He reminds me of Nik Stauskas. He is a deadly shooter who would live behind the arc if he could, but possess the athleticism to blow by defenders and finish with authority at the rim. He gets his shot off in little time and can release in multiple positions. Local school Boston College is pressing hard for Aaron but Jays could make up lots of ground if they can get him campus, and look for the Jays to do so. He has been one of the bigger revelations this season in EYBL play and recently joined the ESPN 100 and Virginia and Gonzaga have called.

May 2014 Update :: Falzon is the definition of a skilled big. His game is predicated on his outside abilities, but attempt to take that aspect of his game away and he will drive past you and finish strong at the rim. Falzon is one of the more under-valued players in the entire class. I believe he has the ability to be a All-Conference type player by the time he finishes his college career. Look for the Jays to remain highly interested in this Prep School prospect.

Recruiting Update :: Boston College, Northwestern, Providence, Creighton, Rhode Island, Penn State, & Dayton

Chris Clarke :: 6’5” :: (Cape Henry Collegiate) :: Boo Williams

Chris Clarke BLOWING up EYBL

June 2014 Update :: Clarke’s play has placed him a must-get for many schools heading into the mid-summer period, including Creighton. Clarke has long been interested in the Jays and constantly puts them at the top of his list of schools recruiting him hard, and places he would like to visit. Creighton Coach Patrick Sellers is the head recruiter for the East Coast prospect and looks to be selling Clarke that he can be a productive player on the Hilltop from Day 1. As I mentioned earlier Clarke has as good a motor as anyone around. He is a ball-hawk and a terror on the offensive and defensive glass. His game is not pretty but it is effective and his skill set seems perfect for some of the more skilled players Creighton is recruiting. Look for Creighton to get a visit soon. Creighton has made Chris a priority.

May 2014 Update :: Clarke is a lunch-pail type of wing. He does the little things on the court that produce wins. He has a high-major motor to go along with an improving skill set. He puts himself in the right places on the floor with be dangerous on the offensive end, and prides himself on tough, in your face defense.

Recruiting Update :: Maryland, Creighton, Virginia Tech, Minnesota, Miami, & VCU

Matt Milon :: 6’4” :: (Oviedo) :: Q6 All Stars

June 2014 Update :: May bought a few more mid-major offers in for Matt, but no game-changing schools or news to update you with. Milon recently went on record saying that he plans on verbally committing at the end of the summer. Look for Creighton to prioritize bringing Milon back on to campus. Losing out for McQuaid puts added emphasis on the Jays to bring in a solid shooter in this class, Milon fits the bill.

May 2014 Update :: Creighton is quickly gaining a reputation as a program known for it’s elite shooters. From Korver to McDermott, the Jays are using the “Shooter U” moniker to attract some of the nation’s deadliest shooters. Enter Matt Milon. Milon is widely regarded as one of the best marksmen in the 2015 class. Watching film of Milon is impressive. He makes the net splash. His mechanics are perfect. The 6’4” lefty has good size for the shooting guard spot with a body that can take the pounding the Big East will certainly offer.

Recruiting Update :: Creighton, Florida State, Purdue, Boston College, & Michigan

Billy Wampler :: 6’6” :: (Regis) :: D1 Minnesota

Billy Wampler @ Comets Shootout

June 2014 Update :: Wampler has continued his rise as one of the hottest break out players on the circuit this spring. He is an all-around stat stuffing wing who can score, rebound, dish and play solid defense. He is the total package and has a work ethic to match his versatility. Wampler’s Creighton offerseen by the experts as the best offer he has gotten. He also claims interest from Richmond and Davidson, but look for Big Ten power Wisconsin and hometown Minnesota to offer to spice up his recruitment with offers in the middle of the summer if those schools lose out on bigger targets. Look for Wampler to either attend the Jays Elite Camp or make an trip down to Omaha soon to check out the facilities.

May 2014 Update :: Every season a player seems to burst onto the AAU scene and really climb into the national spotlight. This season that player is undoubtedly Billy Wampler. The 6’6” wing from Wisconsin had an excellent high school season and has transitioned that nicely into a productive start to the AAU season. Wampler succeeds at any position on the floor. He can shoot, pass, rebound, defend, and is seen as one of the vocal leaders on his team. His has sneaky athleticism and is tough to defend as he can finish at the rim, has a good mid-range game, and is a solid three point shooter.

Recruiting Update :: Creighton, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Marquette, & Stanford

Donovan Mitchell :: 6’4” :: (Brewster Academy) :: The City

Spring 2014 Donovan Mitchell Interview

June 2014 Update :: Mitchell is beginning to draw the attention of major players in D1. Schools from around the country are looking at the comb0-guard from New England, but it sounds like Mitchell sees himself playing the on the East. Mitchell recently compared his game to Russell Westbrook, an athletic lead guard who likes to get others involved but can score at will when needed. Michell recently told Adam Zagoria he hopes to decide on his school in early September so he can focus on academics, with “Providence, Creighton, Boston College, Xavier, Georgia Tech, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Florida and UConn” heavily involved. My money is on Providence as a leader at this point, but Mitchell is serious about Creighton and a visit is likely in the works.

May 2014 Update :: Mitchell is the growing crop of North Eastern based recruits Creighton is beginning to get involved with. Mitchell is great scorer who prides himself on getting to the basket with his speed and strength, yet does posses a good jump shot. Mitchell is being chased by a number of top schools in the Big East, with Creighton being near the top of his list. At 6’4” Donovan is being recruited as both a point guard as well as scoring guard, at Creighton I believe he would fit in as more of a scorer than distributor.

Recruiting Update :: Providence, Boston College, Creighton, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Cincinnati & Iowa

DJ Hogg :: 6’7” :: (Plano West) :: Texas Titans

Smooth Texas Wings in 2015

Hogg in the EYBL

Hogg is a Sniper

June 2014 Update :: Hogg is a top 50 player that has drawn interest from Coach Lutz and McDermott because of his versatility. Hogg is an outstanding athlete and scorer, what separates Hogg from others is his ability to pair those aspects of his game with his range from three. He is a volume shooter and that can curl off screens and moves tirelessly to get himself open from beyond the arc. Look for Creighton to push HARD to get Hogg on campus.

Recruiting Update :: Baylor, Arizona, SMU, Texas A&M, Creighton & Oklahoma State

Jordan Murphy :: 6’7” :: (William J. Brennan) :: Texas D1 Ambassadors

Smooth Texas Wings in 2015

June 2014 Update :: Murphy is a smooth wing from the Lone Star state that Creighton has been hot after for a number of months. Murphy has continued to improve his game and can score in many ways. He actually reminds me of future Creighton wing Leon Gilmore. Murphy has good size and is seems to glide on the court. He has the ability to both play and defend any position apart from the 5 at the next level. Murphy claims Creighton, Maryland and Texas A&M coming at him the hardest with Baylor, Oklahoma St, SMU, Texas & Kansas State also on the trail.

Recruiting Update :: Creighton, Texas A&M & Maryland

Juwan Morgan :: 6’8” :: (Waynesville) :: MoKan Elite

Morgan Shows Up on EYBL Sessions 1-3

June 2014 Update :: Morgan had a number of highly productive games on the EYBL that he began to solidify himself as the star of the MoKan Elite squad. While Juwan is an athletic player he is not overly flashy. He will make an incredible dunk or block, but he prides himself on putting himself in the right situation and battling hard for position and boxing out. He has a keen sense of knowing where to be for a rebound and uses his extreme athleticism and length to out-hustle many other players. Since his play for MoKan has been so impressive A number of schools have begun to make inroads with Juwan, but it is important to note that Creighton was one of the first schools to identify and prioritize Morgan. Important to note that Morgan is an outstanding student and is looking for a top academic institution to match its basketball program.

May 2014 Update :: Morgan is an solid athlete who is active both on the offense and defensive ends of the floor. He battles for loose balls and has a knack for finding a rebound over big players. He is a good finisher with both hands and quick with the ball in the post.

Malik Beasley :: 6’4” :: (St. Francis) :: Georgia Stars

June 2014 Update :: Big time scorer who does not rely on the outside shot to fill up his line. He’s had multiple games above 25 points in the highly competitive EYBL. He went from unranked at the beginning of the spring to a top 50 prospect moving forward. He recently was invited to Pangos Top 100 and Nike Skills Summit. He has insane athleticism and abilities. His father is from the Omaha area, despite now living in Atlanta. Look for Creighton to be involved all summer.

Kain Harris :: 6’4” :: (St. Rita) :: Chicago Meanstreets

2014 Kain Harris MixTape

June 2014 Update :: Kain’s play for Chicago Meanstreets has left a number of scouts asking more questions about his game. He has all tools to be a game changing guard but has not found his role both in AAU or at the High School level. He has shown flashes of brilliance but will then come back with mediocre play.

May 2014 Update :: Kain is quickly becoming a recruiting priority for the Jays. His play for Illinois high school state champions Morgan Park help catapult him into national relevance. Kain drips with confidence, something that has helped him earn the nickname “Baby Kobe,” for his tendency to want the ball in the clutch and produce when it matters the most. Harris has an excellent frame and seems to get better every week. Harris is extremely under-recruited and should see a host of new schools come in to play following this summer’s EYBL season, however Creighton was one of the first schools on Kain and has a really good relationship with he and his family.

Jalen Adams :: 6’1” :: (Cushing Academy) :: Mass Rivals

Jalen Adams @ Adidas Gaunlet

June 2014 Update :: Adams still claims that Creighton is one a five schools that are high up on his list, but experts believe that UConn is close to securing the talented comb0-guard. Tough to beat the Huskies who have openings in their backcourt and are coming off an NCAA tournament championship with arguably the most popular coach in D1 at the moment. Adams continues to jump up the rankings but look for the Jays to be on the outside looking in with Adams.

Adams is widely considered one of best combo guards in the nation for 2015. He leads Cushing Academy a perennial powerhouse in the New England Prep School league. . Adams like most lead guards, Jalen has outstanding vision and is one quickest players with the ball I’ve ever seen. At 6’1” Adams has little problem finishing at the rim and is at his best when he breaks down his own man and is forced to make quick decisions.

Recruiting Update :: UConn, Kansas, Creighton, & Georgia Tech

Christian James :: 6’5” :: (Bellaire) :: Houston Hoops

June 2014 Update :: James’ play has been up and down over the last month. He has been an important piece of the highly successful Houston Hoops program but cannot seem to take the reigns as the squads elite scorer. His stats would suggest he does many things well but nothing all that great. He is not true three point threat, an asset the Jays need from his position.

May 2014 Update :: James is the pure definition of a scoring guard. He has great size and abilities with the ball in his hands. He is a constant threat to score from nearly anywhere in the flow of an offense. At 6’5” he is a tough match-up for most 2′s and would be lethal in the McDermott’s system coming off screens and cutting to the hoop. Creighton has been very active in his recruitment and look for James to visit Creighton in the near future. James is the elite type of athlete Creighton has missed out on in the past while a member of the MVC, we’ll see if he is the type of player Creighton wants to sign moving forward.

Terance Mann :: 6’5” :: (Tilton School) :: BABC

Terance Mann MixTape

June 2014 Update :: Mann continues to shine as the best player on the BABC squad. Coach Sellers has identified Mann is a serious target for Creighton since his arrival onto Creighton’s campus and is hopeful to show Mann just what Creighton has to offer. I think Creighton is still far behind some of Mann’s leaders which seem to be most squads on the East Coast.

May 2014 Update :: Mann is a highly emotional player who is best when attacking the basket. Mann plays with an aggressiveness that Creighton seemed to lack at times this year. He is active on he boards and in the passing lanes. Mann is the next in line of the many talented New England Prep school scoring guards. He has a similar game to former Xavier player Semaj Christon in that he is elusive with the ball and can contort his body a number of ways while still getting his shot up. Mann is also a

Ed Morrow :: 6’8” :: (Simeon) :: Mac Irvin Fire

Morrow EYBL MixTape

June 2014 Update :: Morrow continues to dunk and continues to say that Nebraska and the Big Ten is where is highly interested. The Nebraska native says that he will make a decision at some point after the AAU circuit and has already visited Creighton. I think Morrow’s abilities would be well-utilized in McDermott’s system but at this point a few other teams have Morrow ahead of the Jays and vice versa.

May 2014 Update :: Morrow dunks everything. He is a big time athlete with a nose for the rim. He is electric in the open court. He is originally from Nebraska as his parents both attended UN-L, who is seen as one of the leaders for his services. Morrow reportedly took and unofficial visit to Creighton last month and has the Jays near the top of his list of potential suitors.

Davon Dillard :: 6’5” :: (Bowman Academy) :: Mac Irvin Fire

Davon Dillard @ Future’s Camp

June 2014 Update :: Dillard has solidified him as a top 100 player with his play the last few months. He is seen as a 2-3 combo player who possess a high motor and freak-ish athleticism. He is a player who will likely visit Creighton in the next month.

May 2014 Update :: Dillard is a strong wing player who plays with incredible bounce. He prefers to finish everything with a dunk and is capable of not only putting the ball on the court to blow by defenders, but can also finish above bigger players in the lane.

Jimmy Whitt :: 6’4” :: (Columbia-Hickman) :: KC Run GMC

Jimmy Whitt @ JayHawk Invitational

June 2014 Update :: Whitt’s play has elevated him into the Top 50-75 players in the class and while he still lists Creighton as someone he is talking with I don’t think the Jays are high up on his list.

May 2014 Update :: Whitt is a wiry guard who has a lethal jump shot and floater in the lane. He can both initiate the team’s offense or work himself around screens to get his own shot. He is brave in the lane and has under-rated athleticism. Whitt is not the biggest or best athlete on the floor but seems to consistently dominate the game.
