Basketball Quick Hits: 1/5/09

There are times when instead of eating a donut, you instead pop a bunch of donut holes. This is what our Quick Hits is about. Here are a few tasty nuggets from the world of Creighton and Missouri Valley Conference athletics:

  • Catch up on the “Week in the Valley” with our postings at Rush The Court. See standings, top stories, reviews of the teams from the previous week and the key games coming up that you don’t want to miss.
  • The women’s basketball team is 2-0 on the conference season with both wins on the road. They’re beating people so bad that they broke their bus, too!  Sam Schuett earned MVC Player of the Week honors and Ally Jensen gets a nice mention as well. The women open the home portion of their conference slate on Thursday against Wichita State and then Missouri State on Saturday afternoon.
  • The great people at Creighton Sports Information always are always on the ball with some great nuggets of info. Here is the one for today: The last CU player with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 blocks in the same game before Kenny Lawson’s effort Sunday against Evansville? How ’bout Benoit Benjamin in 1985.
  • Talking to the Sports Information office, Wednesday’s men’s basketball home game against Drake is likely still going to be played whether the weather is cooperative or not. The Drake team will be in Omaha sometime today (Tuesday) and as long as the officials are able to make it into town, there will be a game at the Qwest Center. So, bundle up and have a good time.
  • For the game at Wichita on Saturday, the ESPNU commentary crew will be Dan McLaughlin and Mac McCausland, two veteran announcers that regularly cover the MVC. The broadcast should be a good one — hopefully the Bluejays can make sure the game is good, too. I wonder who the broadcasters will be when ESPN comes back to Omaha for the CU-WSU game next weekend…
  • Speaking of Wichita, CU Athletics is requesting all fans wear a white shirt next Saturday, January 16th, when the Shockers come to town to create a “White Out” environment. As much as some people would like you to believe otherwise, there are many who developed the “White Out” idea before 2006. But with the game being on TV, this should make for a nice effect.
  • Many readers may be aware of Creighton playing Iowa State next season at the Wells Fargo Center in Des Moines as was reported at Big 12 media days by Iowa St. head coach Greg McDermott, but many may not be aware of the other teams Creighton will be playing at home as a part of this Multi-Team Tourney in the Winter of 2010.   We noticed this back in November, but according to Basketball Travelers, it appears that Northern Arizona and Alabama St. will be on the home slate for next season with a third team TBD before culminating in Des Moines.
  • T. Scott Marr hosts the Creighton Sports Hour every Thursday at 7 p.m. on Big Sports 590 AM. Tune in Thursday while also catching the women’s basketball game broadcast on KOIL 1180 AM.
  • Dana Altman’s monthly Assist Luncheon is this Friday at noon. If you are not already going, you might be able to still go if space is available and you give 48-hours notice. E-mail Patty Galas if you want to go.
