Thoughts on the Big East Baseball Tournament

The last time Creighton hosted a conference baseball tournament, the Bluejays claimed the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference championship. Four years and a new league later, Creighton gets another chance to welcome guests to the Home of the College World Series.

The tournament’s already better than last year’s, since 1) it is a true double elimination format and 2) it isn’t being played at an amusement park in front of no one. Granted, we won’t see CWS-type crowds at TD Ameritrade Park this week. But anything’s better than having more people in the two dugouts than in the stands.

The crowd (hopefully) will be overwhelmingly supportive of a team Ed Servais praised before the season started for its pitching depth and overall athleticism. If the Jays are to win the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament this weekend, they’ll need to rely heavily on both. Picking up some clutch hits with runners in scoring position wouldn’t be too much to ask, either, right?

St. John’s, Seton Hall, and Georgetown round out the four-team field; the Jays are 5-3 collectively against this group in 2015.

The Mother Nature Report

Spring rain can wreck havoc on postseason college baseball. Hopefully the Baseball gods can collaborate with, um, the real God, and we can have weather that won’t negatively affect the possible 7 games set to be played over four days. From Accuweather.com:

  • Low 70s and sunny Thursday afternoon, giving way to temps in the low 60s into the evening
  • Mid 60s and cloudy Friday afternoon, with chance of showers, giving way to temps in the low 60s into the evening
  • Mid 60s Saturday afternoon, with chance of strong thunderstorms
  • Mid 60s Sunday afternoon and evening, with chances for more storms

Catching Up With Creighton

The Bluejays ended the Big East regular season on a positive note, sweeping Villanova in Omaha last weekend. From Patrick Marshall:

The Creighton Baseball team bounced back this weekend with a sweep in this week’s regular season ending series against Villanova. The Bluejays walked away with a 13-5 win on Thursday afternoon, a 4-2 win on Friday evening, and escaped with a 4-3 victory on Saturday morning.
