On Tuesday, Creighton ace Ty Blach was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the MLB Draft (178th overall). The Junior southpaw was one of the most dominant starters in Creighton’s rich baseball history, compiling a career 2.76 ERA that ranks second all-time. He led the late-season charge this season with a complete game one-hit shutout in the opening game of the MVC Tournament against regular-season champion Indiana State, and eight innings of solid work against UCLA in the NCAA Tournament.

He’s the highest draft pick to come out of Creighton’s baseball program since 1999 when Ryan Gripp went to the Chicago Cubs in the third round (110th overall), and the highest pitcher since 1994 when a pair of Bluejay hurlers went early in the draft — Rick Heiserman in the third, Dan Hower in the fourth.

On Tuesday, Blach talked to the media following the news that he’d been selected by the Giants, and addressed topics including his stellar junior season, his excitement on joining San Francisco’s system, and the amazing late-season run this year’s team went on.

Mike Gerber, the MVC Tournament MVP, injured his hamstring late in Sunday’s win over New Mexico and did not play in the finale against UCLA. He updated the media on the injury, talked about the season that just concluded, and discussed what the Jays need to do to get back to the NCAA Tournament next year.

Nick Judkins, the Jays outstanding senior first baseman, talked to the media about what the future holds for the Bluejay program which loses 12 seniors plus junior Ty Blach.

And finally, head coach Ed Servais discusses how proud he is of Blach, the 14th player drafted in his nine seasons at the helm of the Bluejay program.
