Myah Mellman is a sharp-shooting guard out of Mason City High School in Mason City, Iowa (same city/school as former Creighton Baseball standout & current minor league player for the Chicago White Sox, Jake Peter). Prior to joining the Bluejays she also played for the same AAU team as former Bluejay Ally Jensen and current Creighton senior Sammy Jensen. That makes it less surprising that she brings an ability to shoot from beyond the arc to D.J. Sokol Arena as Ally is fifth all-time at Creighton with 220 career three-point field goals made, while Sammy won the three-point shootout at Bluejay Madness as a sophomore in 2012.

Mellman has not disappointed in the three-point shooting department in her brief time at Creighton. After hitting 100 three-pointers at a 43% clip in her final two seasons at Mason City High School, she has picked up right where she left off in the first few weeks of practice. While it remains to be seen where she will find playing time in a crowded Creighton back court, you can never have enough players capable of coming in and knocking down three-pointers, and that’s what Mellman does very well.

Mellman’s High School Stats:

Senior — 13.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.0 spg, 55-140 3FG (39%)

Junior — 11.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, 0.6 spg, 45-95 3FG (47%)

Head Coach Jim Flanery on Mellman:

“Myah can shoot it and she’s a smart player. And she’s going to have to be, because she’s not the biggest or the most athletic. She’s going to have to be super intelligent, play hard, and be a low-mistake player who can knock down threes. She’s done a good job of that so far.”

5-on-5 with Myah Mellman:

Q: What were some of the deciding factors for you in choosing Creighton?

A: “Definitely it’s a great academic school. Obviously we have great coaches, definitely I think the best that there is. My teammates are awesome, too. That all definitely played a big role in [the decision].”

Q: How do you think your game translates to this level, and how can you help right away?

A: “I know I was recruited because I can shoot the three-ball really well. They definitely spread the floor and get a lot of threes up, so hopefully I can contribute in that way.”

Q: What is one area of your game you think needs to improve the most?

A: “Definitely defense. That’s been the biggest struggle since I’ve gotten here. Everybody’s a lot quicker, faster, and stronger.”

Q: How has practice and preseason workouts gone for you so far?

A: “It’s gone really well — I’ve enjoyed it a lot. My teammates and coaches are really helpful in teaching, so it’s been a lot easier than what I thought it was going to be.”

Q: What are some of your goals for your college career?

A: “Honestly I just want to be able to make an impact on the team and the girls around me.”
