Today in the Valley

Today in the Valley: December 22, 2010

Missouri State (7-3) vs. Arkansas State (4-7)

JHQ Arena; Springfield, MO

7:00 CST

Missouri State will enter tonight’s game after a hot shooting performance where the Bears shot 63.6% from the field. The Bears took out the Billikens of St. Louis 81-65 and will have the opportunity to go to 8-3 on the season when they host Arkansas State.

The 4-7 Red Wolves were able to take care of Savanah State 68-55, and need a win tonight to get back on track before the start of their conference slate.

Bradley(5-5) vs. Detroit (7-4)

Carver Arena; Peoria, Il.

7:00 CST

The Braves were able to take car of business on Monday night as the took down Jackson State 64-55. The Braves needed this win to get to the .500 mark on the season and build a bit of momentum heading into conference play.

Bradley will hope to improve on their last victory when they host the Titans of Detroit. The Titans are coming off a win of their own as they beat Central Michigan 75-49. This could be a tough game for either side tonight, but I like the home court advantage.

Indiana (9-2) vs. Northern Iowa (7-3)

Orleans Arena; Las Vegas, NV

6:30 PM CST

Las Vegas Classic

TV:  CBS College Sports

The Panthers cruised to two victories at home to start off the Las Vegas Classic.  The competition increases when they head to Vegas.  Tonight they will take on Indiana in the semifinals.  New Mexico and Colorado face off on the other side of the bracket and the Panthers will face one of them tomorrow.  UNI has a chance to represent the Valley and get a few wins against BCS conference opponents.

Tom Crean is slowing turning things around at Indiana.  Their only two losses this year have come against Boston College and Kentucky.  Christian Watford leads the Hoosiers in scoring at 18.3 ppg.  Just like the Panthers, Indiana defeated South Carolina St. and SIU-Edwardsville in their first two Las Vegas Classic games.

Southern Illinois (5-5) vs. Northern Illinois (3-5)

SIU Arena; Carbondale,  IL

7:05 PM CST

It will be Military Appreciation day tonight at SIU Arena when the Salukis and Huskies meet.  The Salukis take the court for the first time since a 53-46 loss at Western Kentucky back on December 11th.  The extra time off gave students a chance to study for finals and Coach Lowery to work them in practice.  We’ll see if it pays off win a victory.

The Huskies are off to a slow start at 3-5.  They have close losses to Bradley (by 3) and DePaul (by 2).  It’s a one man show for Northern Illinois.  Senior Xavier Silas, son of former NBA player James Silas, comes in averaging 28.1 ppg, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.  The transfer from Colorado is in his second season with the Huskies.
