Futbol Friday

Creighton comes into the weekend sporting a 5-1-1 record, a league-leading 18 goals scored, and a rather stingy defensive backfield. Friday and Sunday, the Bluejays look to replicate the outcome of last weekend’s sweep over Cal State Northridge and Lamar. They’ll have to do it away from home, though, down in Lincoln at the adidas Husker Classic.

CU head coach Bruce Erickson took a few moments out of prepping for matches against Akron (Friday at 3:00 p.m.) and North Dakota (Sunday at 10:30 a.m.) to answer a few questions about last week’s efforts and this week’s tough matchups.

Creighton's Emily Orbell

Creighton's Emily Orbell

WBR: Your team was able to put together two more wins this past weekend. What specifically will you build from in those wins?

Erickson: We played better this weekend, and that’s important because progressing every game is our goal. We have also created a ton of chances so we need to finish these, too.

WBR: Preseason all-conference selection Emily Orbell had a great weekend, earning the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor. Do you see more performances like that from her in the future?

Erickson: The best two games Emily has played this year were this past weekend. We need to build her confidence because she can take over games. She has the potential and talent to be the best player in the MVC.

WBR: Who would be your player to watch as we head into the Husker Classic down in Lincoln?

Erickson: I would say Emily Orbell, although Macy Mauer has returned from injury and I look for big things from her too.

WBR: You have three remaining nonconference games before you hit your conference schedule. How important is it for your team to play well in these remaining matches? What will you look for in these remaining non-conference tests?

Erickson: It is important that we improve every game. Oh, and definitely staying healthy.
