Bluejay Beat: Creighton 79, #9 Villanova 59

Creighton wins 79-59

Creighton lost a stinker against Arizona St. the other night.  Baylor shut down Villanova over the weekend.  Creighton has never lost on a Friday night.  Villanova hasn’t lost a Big East opener for a long time.  Something had to give in the opener of the Big East slate on Friday night.  The Bluejays gave themselves lead before halftime and came close to relinquishing it midway through the second half.  However, a 23-5 run to end the game by the Bluejays and a rowdy crowd at CHI Health Center Omaha helped Creighton get a 79-59 victory over the Wildcats.

Ryan Hawkins had a double-double, leading the Jays with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.  Ryan Nembhard had 14 points, while Alex O’Connell and Trey Alexander had 14 and 12 respectively for the players in double-figures.

It was the defense down the stretch with Ryan Kalkbrenner, Hawkins, Nembhard, Alexander, and Rati Andronikashvili that left Villanova without good looks inside or outside.  The Wildcats did not get a field goal in the final 5+ minutes of the game.

Matt DeMarinis and former Bluejay Cole Huff got together after the game to break it all down and get into the weeds of Creighton’s victory.  Take a listen and enjoy.
