Last week, Anthony Tolliver of the Minnesota Timberwolves participated in the Omaha Metro Summer Basketball League. This weekend, a few more of his fellow NBA peers might be playing hoops in Omaha.
Benson High School is the site of a Celebrity Basketball Game this Saturday, July 30, at 3:30 p.m. Omaha Central head coach Eric Behrens and former Creighton basketball player Donnie Johnson will coach teams that will include former Nebraska and Creighton players as well as some pros.
Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose, Kyle Korver, and Taj Gibson and Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade are tentatively scheduled to participate, either in the game or in other festivities such as a three-point shootout and slam dunk contest during halftime.
Other players scheduled to participate include Creighton alums Kaleb Korver and Justin Carter, and Nebraska grads Wes Wilkinson, John Turek, and Jason Dourisseau.
The event is part of Native Omaha Days, which takes place every other year in the Omaha community. Since 1976, the event lures former Omaha residents back to the area by having picnics, family reunions, class reunions, and even a parade. Held in North Omaha, the event features celebrities like Gale Sayers and Gabrielle Union that have returned to Omaha in the past to celebrate.
Doors for the basketball game open at 2:30 p.m. Kids under 5 will be admitted free, children 5-12 will cost $5 and 13 and older will be $10. This is a great opportunity to see some NBA players in action as well as some former local basketball players.
