There has been news lately that has involved past, present and future Bluejay baseball players.
Present
- Darin Ruf was selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Philiadelphia Phillies. He was one of 18 Missouri Valley Conference players drafted in the first day of the 50 round draft and the only player from Creighton. Ruf was a nice, solid 4-year player for the Jays.
- Ruf along with 2nd baseman Vicente Cafaro were awarded Rawlings Gold Glove Awards as a couple of the best defensive players for the 2009 season. This is the 2nd time Ruf has won the award becoming the first D-1 player to win the award multiple times. Along with Cafaro, Creighton became the first Division-I school to have multiple players win awards in the same season.
Future
- Future Bluejay pitcher Mark Winkelman was selected to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 1A-2A All-State team. Winkelman was a standout this season with a 10-2 record, an ERA of 0.61 and 131 strikeouts. At the plate, Winkelman hit .588 with six home runs, 30 RBIs and 43 runs scored. These numbers put Winkelman in the top 50 in several career statistics in the Illinois High School Baseball record book.
Past
- Switch pitcher Pat Vanditte was featured in a couple of news stories this week. Some questioning whether he can make it to the big leads pitching from both sides of the plate. First the Guelph Mercury went first talking about the great success Pat has had. The New York Times then did their own article and it seemed to have a totally different tone looking at it from a scout’s point of view. With how bad the Yankee’s bullpen is these days, they could probably use someone like Pat.
