Every team needs a utility player. Jasmin Corbin fits that role for the Creighton Bluejays. The junior from Millard West came off the bench in all 31 games last season, averaging about 10 minutes a game and chipping in two points and a rebound on average.

The biggest threat Corbin presents is her outside shot. As a sophomore, 15 of her 18 field goals made were 3-pointers. As a freshman, 9 of her 14 field goals made were 3s. Her shot is something she is always working on.

“I worked a lot on my shooting [in the offseason], so hopefully that improves this season,” Corbin remarked. “I also worked on my defense. That is one of my strong points I have to take advantage of.”

The defense could come in handy for her as the season goes along. Corbin came on strong at the end of last season, swiping 7 steals over the final seven games after only having 7 steals through the first 24 games of the year

As a dual threat guard, she can play the point or the shooting guard spots and can distribute the ball to her teammates. Last season she had a couple games where she showed flashes of that type of play. Against North Dakota Corbin had a career-high 5 assists, 5 points and 3 rebounds in a career-high 19 minutes of play. Later in the season she had 5 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals against Bradley.

This season, there is a lot of excitement as to the role Corbin might play on and off the court. Being one of the upperclassmen, she is expected to lead the way.

“I try to keep everybody up while at the same time I have my own ups and downs. But we look for each other to pick each other up. It is sort of a leadership role I have as well as just being there to answer questions.”

Some of that leadership came across at Bluejay Madness a couple of weeks ago in the 3-point shootout.

“I just went out to have fun. It was competitive, but I just went out to enjoy myself and at the same time relax and shoot it. Hopefully that will carry over into the games.”

Corbin is looking forward to the season in general and thinks that the Bluejays will have some surprises for opponents.

“I’m excited about how much fun we will have with this team,” said Corbin. “I think that we are going to be able to do a lot of special thing even though we are younger. We lost a lot of experience last year, so it will be a lot of fun seeing how fast we are going to improve this season. We have to go one game at a time, but we can go as far as we want to go. If we do everything right we can potentially go a long way.”
