The weekends are a busy time for Bluejays sports. Each Monday, WBR helps you catch up on all the Creighton sports you might have missed.
Another weekend, another outstanding showing by the Creighton volleyball team. Kirsten Bernthal Booth’s team traveled to Greeley, Colorado, and dropped just one set en route to winning the Northern Colorado Classic. Playing against three teams that appeared in last year’s NCAA Tournament, the Bluejays sandwiched a 3-1 win against Tulsa with sweeps of Ball State and host UNC to move to 8-1 on the season.
Ditto for Elmar Bolowich’s Bluejays men’s soccer squad. Third-ranked Creighton (4-0-1) captured two 1-0 wins in California this weekend. The first, against Santa Clara, saw Christian Blandon score in the 69th minute and Alex Bolowich blank the Broncos with four saves and a clean sheet. The second victory came at Saint Mary’s, thanks to a Jose Ribas goal shortly after the start of the second half. Jeff Gal started in goal and recorded the shutout with three saves. The Bluejays are now 15-0-3 in their last 18 matches against California schools.
The women’s soccer team battled for a win and suffered a crushing loss. Playing on the “road” against Nebraska-Omaha, Bruce Erickson’s Bluejays (2-5-1) got two goals from Brittney Neumann and defeated UNO 4-1. Two days later, the Jays couldn’t solve Cal State Fullerton’s defense and dropped a difficult 1-0 match. This despite Katie Jo Swanson saving a career-high 11 shots.
