When we first started this series back in the summer of 2020 it was originally meant as a fun way to fill the temporary sports and entertainment void caused by the pandemic. The bad news, a year and a half later, is we’re still dealing with COVID-19. The good news is we still have plenty of these commentaries of Creighton’s greatest games that we haven’t posted yet. So, to help fill the gap between now and the next time we get to watch some real, live Creighton basketball, here is another classic from the way back machine.
On this episode, former point guard Sydney Lamberty and current assistant coach Linda Sayavongchanh join us to rewatch their 76-70 first-round win over Iowa in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Lamberty, a senior at the time, scored nine straight points over a 5-minute stretch late in the fourth quarter to give the Jays a 68-61 lead with 1:40 to play. CU went 8-for-10 at the free throw line over those last 100 seconds to seal the win.
Lamberty finished with 20 points (15 of which came after halftime) to go along with six assists, five rebounds, and just two turnovers in 39 minutes. It was also a coming out party of sorts on the national stage for Jaylyn Agnew. The eventual Big East Player of the Year and 2nd round WNBA Draft pick was just a redshirt sophomore wing at the time, but she rose to the occasion in this one with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting (4-of-6 from 3-point range), five assists, two steals, and no turnovers in 38 minutes of action. She scored 11 of those points in the third quarter to help Creighton build a 56-50 lead heading to the final period.
Creighton’s senior point guard closed the show from there.
