Women's Soccer

Futbol Friday

Bruce Erickson and the Creighton women’s soccer team have two home games this week: tonight against Cal State Northridge (7:00 p.m.) and Sunday against Lamar (1:00 p.m.). In the first installment of Futbol Friday, White & Blue Review caught up with Coach Erickson for a quick Q&A about the upcoming week of Bluejays women’s soccer.

WBR: With a record of 3-1-1, your team has gotten off to a terrific start this season. What has been the biggest surprise so far this year?

Erickson: We’ve had more [surprises] in the first 3 weeks this year than we had all last season. Thankfully, they all appear to be short-term [issues].

WBR: What are this week’s key matchups for your team?

Erickson: Cal State Northridge is a talented team with great wins against San Diego State and Loyola Marymount. They very well could be the best team we play in the regular season. We hope to match up well against them.

WBR: Is there an individual player that CU fans should keep an eye on this week?

Erickson: Gaby Guillen, our Costa Rican International player, will be playing her first home game. She is an exciting player who will add some flair to our team.

WBR: Can you talk a little bit about her opportunities with the Costa Rica U-20 team?

Erickson: She has had several games in the last few weeks but opted to stay here to get to know her teammates. She will leave Saturday for the Sunday game in El Salvador. That will probably be it for the season, though, as she may develop into one of our best players.

WBR: Your defense has proven stout, allowing just one goal in the first five games. With the success you have had so far, are there any adjustments that you will be making in the next few games?

Erickson: As we saw Tuesday (a 1-0 loss at North Dakota State), we need to be able to convert our chances against every team we play. We create good chances but have to put away goals!
