Notes from Morrison Stadium: Creighton-Drexel

  • What an electric crowd. Reported attendance of 5,425? Against Drexel? On Labor Day weekend? Unbelievable. In three years at Creighton I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it.
  • Starting Lineup:

  • The game got off to a sloppy start but picked up considerably in the second half. Coach Bolowich noted he told the team to “take the chains off” in the second half, and the Jays clearly responded.
  • Ribeiro’s time has come. It was tough to see his goal from over in the student section, but it’s encouraging to see him heavily involved with the attack. We knew he’d get a lot of playing time this year, but he combines well with Creighton’s other offensive weapons, as we saw last night. He’s quick, strong, and can be a major asset for the Bluejays this year.
  • Freshman Eric Miller started the game and played almost flawlessly. I distinctly remember one occasion where he controlled the ball and fought off a Drexel defender with a kind of maturity and poise on the ball that’s rare in a player his age. Miller also is credited with an assist after a picture-perfect centering ball to Greg Jordan, which led to the team’s second goal.
  • Ethan Finlay ought to have scored at least two goals last night, but just wasn’t able to find the back of the net. The Player of the Year candidate had a ridiculous bicycle kick that was just stopped by the Drexel goalkeeper, and a breathtaking shot from about twenty yards out that struck the upper-ninety and bounced out. Even though he didn’t record a goal, Finlay’s play opens up the field for everyone else, and was just as valuable last night as any other player on the field.
  • Brian Holt didn’t get too much action in goal last night, but did make one major save early in the game. Put in an essentially one-on-one situation, Holt came way off his line and stopped a chest-level shot from a Drexel attacker with a good look. This is one of the hardest things for a goalkeeper to do well, and Holt executed perfectly, proving again why he’s the best keeper around.
  • It’s hard to make any sweeping generalizations after this game. Drexel played hard and competes in a good conference, but just isn’t on the same level as Creighton. We know the Bluejays can blow out the teams it needs to, but I’d caution against reading too much into this result.
