Quick Hits: 1/25/09

There are times when instead of eating a donut, you instead pop a bunch of donut holes. WBR’s Quick Hits, then, are our donut holes! Here are a few tasty nuggets from the world of Creighton and Missouri Valley Conference athletics:

  • If you haven’t been following the Valley lately and you want to get caught up on things, take a gander at our Checking in on the MVC” over at Rush the Court. The Valley is wild and wacky these days and the next few weeks will be very interesting.
  • Thanks to Creighton Athletics, Cox Communications and Bradley, Wednesday night’s CU game against Bradley will be available to all Cox Cable customers via Cox Channel 2. The broadcast is originating from Bradley’s TV agreement with Comcast and the interested parties were able to get an agreement so the Creighton fans can see the locally televised game in Omaha as well. Kudos to them.
  • Speaking of TV, the Creighton women’s basketball team will be on TV for their next two games. This Friday night, for the first time, a women’s basketball game will be broadcast on TV from Sokol Arena, as Jim Flanery’s Bluejays host Drake. The game will be on Fox Sports Net. A week later in Springfield, the women will be on Fox Sports Net against Missouri State. Those not in the metro area will get a great opportunity to see Flan’s team in action.
  • If you are into contests, First National Bank has one for you the Creighton fan.   They are hosting a GamePlan Trivia Challenge from now until February 19th. Fans get a chance to enter every week to win four all-session tickets to the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) tournament in St. Louis, MO, from March 4-7, 2010. The prize includes:  Four all-session tickets, giving access to all the MVC tournament games, A $500 gift card to help with travel expenses and a Basketball signed by Coach Dana Altman.  Check out the First National Blog or their specific site for this if you are game.
  • On February 13, the Creighton University Status of Women Committee is sponsoring a “Pink Out” for breast cancer awareness during the women’s basketball game against Evansville. The game starts at 11AM. Wear your pink!
  • Spring sports are starting up (crazy, I know), and some of the teams are hosting events in the next few weeks. Ed Servais’ baseball team hosts their annual Steak Fry Saturday night, February 6, at Castle Barrett (4330 Leavenworth Street). Adult steak dinners are $35 each with advance reservations, or $40 each at the door. Children are admitted free with each paid adult dinner and receive a complimentary hot dog and chips. For more information or to make a reservation, contact Barb Epps at (402) 280-5577 or via e-mail at bepps@creighton.edu by Monday, February 1.
  • The Creighton softball team hosts its coaching clinic on February 6. Visit http://www.creightonsoftballcamps.com/ for more information or call Abby Johnson at 280-5806.
  • Creighton’s tennis teams have started play, with the men’s team taking on Nebraska two weekends ago and then participating in the MVC Individual Championships this past weekend. Tuesday, the women’s team travels to Nebraska for a 4 p.m. matchup. Be on the lookout for some of our daily Today in Bluejay History posts about the tennis teams over the next few weeks, with head coach Tom Lilly providing some insight on some of that history.
