The Dream Season, 20 Years Later: Series Sweep Against Colorado State

Twenty years ago, Jim Hendry and the Creighton Bluejays baseball team began their journey to the program’s first and only trip to the College World Series, one of the greatest accomplishments in Omaha sports history. All spring, White & Blue Review will look back, game by game, at the Bluejays’ own Road to Omaha.

Recap: The Bluejays outscored the Rams 32-12 in the three-game sweep, which followed Creighton’s first loss of the season (at Kansas). In game one, the Bluejays knocked out 19 hits, with Rick Freehling and Ryan Martindale collecting 3 each. But Bobby Langer led the way offensively for the Jays, going 4 for 5 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored.

In game two, the Bluejays put together a 6-run fourth inning to move a 4-2 margin to a 10-2 lead. Brian O’Brien made the lead hold up, picking up the win after 3 ⅔ innings of relief of Eric Kennedy.

To sweep CSU, the Bluejays turned in 19 more hits, 7 of which went for extra bases. John Pivovar went 4 for 4, Dax Jones went 3 for 5, and Freehling, Scott Stahoviak, and Steve Hinton each had 2 hits.
